My nazar is on you - Meher Baba

Meher Baba often told us that suffering brought the individual closer to Him.

One day we were all sitting in the Mandali Hall enjoying a music programme in progress with a large number of people in attendance and in the gathering was a woman holding a small baby in her arms.

Suddenly at one point the baby started to cry, tugging at the mother in its efforts to be free. This greatly embarrassed the mother who kept her hold, but the more she tried to restrain and silence the child, the louder its cries became.

Baba of course noticed the mother's discomfiture and asked that the baby be allowed to crawl on the floor and as soon as this was done the cries were silenced and the baby gurgled happily in its new found freedom.

After the music stopped, Baba began to give a discourse and everyone's attention was focussed on what He was saying. Halfway through the discourse, Baba stopped and pointing to the baby who was close to falling over the threshold of the door, signalled that the mother should retrieve it and let it crawl near her.

Baba then interrupted His discourse to explain the following in these words: "When I say My nazar (grace) is on you, it means I allow you to play with your own little games just as you saw this baby do, and when you are about to fall and hurt yourself, I pick you up and put you in a safe place and let you continue with your game. However, when I pick you up, like the baby you throw a tantrum, for My act of picking you up appears in a form of suffering for you, but I know what is good for you. It is only your suffering that will bring you close to Me and when you suffer, know that My nazar is on you."

Reading too many books? Quote from Yogananda.

Yogananda : Don't waste time on distractions: reading too much, and so on.  Reading can be good if it is instructive or inspiring, but if you let it interfere with meditation it becomes an evil.  Read only a little bit, to find inspiration, but spend most of the time in meditative Silence.

No one can give you desire for God. You must cultivate that desire in yourselves.

Yogananda : No one can give you the desire for God.  You must cultivate that desire in yourselves.  God Himself couldn't give it to you.  For when He created human beings, He didn't make them puppets.  You must desire Him, yourselves.

"Be wary of developing too keen an intelligence.  Many people use their power of reasoning cleverly to justify their delusion.  Concentrate more, on developing heart quality.  Devote as much time as you can, daily, to meditation; to actually experiencing God.

"Don't sleep too much.  Sleep is the unconcious way of contacting God.  Sleep is counterfeit ecstasy."

"Don't joke too much.  I myself, as you know, like a good laugh, but if I make up my mind to be serious, no one can make me even smile.  Be happy and cheerful - above all inwardly.  Be outwardly grave, but inwardly cheerful."

"Don't waste the perception of God's presence, acquired in meditation, by useless chatting.  Idle words are like bullets: they riddle the milk pace of peace.  In devoting time unnecessarily to conversation and exuberant laughter, you'll find you have nothing left inside.  Fill the pail of your conciousness with the milk of meditative peace, then keep it filled.  Joking is false happiness.  Too much laughter riddles the mind and lets the peace in the bucket flow out, wasting it.

"Wine, sex and money: These are the three great delusions.  Don't be trapped by them.  Some of you are weak, I know, but don't be discouraged.  Meditate regularly, and you will find the joy inside that is real.  You will then have something to compare to sense pleasures.

This shift to a total carbohydrate diet that has happened in the last twenty-five or thirty years needs to be reversed because a person’s long-term health will be seriously affected if they just eat lots of carbohydrate and very little of other things. - Sadhguru.

Sadhguru on one of the major reasons of our ill-health.

Sadhguru : “Today, doctors are saying that 40% of the Indian population is heading to be diabetic. One of the reasons for this is most Indian people are on a single-cereal diet. People are eating either only rice or only wheat. This can definitely cause health problems. It is important to bring in a multigrain diet in one’s life.

In the last fifty years, they say eighty-seven varieties of pulses, grains, legumes and cereals have been lost for good in India. If you walked into a shop even thirty years ago in South India, there would be so many kinds of lentils. Today, it is either tuvar dhal, urad dhal or green gram dhal, that’s it. Even in Arab countries today – where half the land is desert – you find fifteen different types of cereals. India has only three or four left because we are wiping them out so effectively.

Traditionally, people always ate lots of grams, pulses, legumes and other things. But slowly those things have gone away, and if you look at a South Indian’s plate today, there will be so much rice and just a little bit of vegetable. This is a serious problem. This shift to a total carbohydrate diet that has happened in the last twenty-five or thirty years needs to be reversed because a person’s long-term health will be seriously affected if they just eat lots of carbohydrate and very little of other things. This is a basic conceptual change which needs to happen in people’s minds. The majority of the diet should not be rice but all the other things. Rice is your choice – whether you want to eat or not, you decide according to your hunger levels.”

Those who meditate on Self, with utmost faith and trust, the help from God will come automatically.

BHAGAVAN RAMANA TELLS THE STORY OF THE SPARROW

When a sparrow was flying, holding its egg in its beak, the egg slipped and fell into the ocean. The sparrow, anxious to retrieve it, repeatedly dipped itself in the ocean, sucked some water through its beak, came to the shore, released the water and fanned its wings. The sage Narada who was passing that way saw this action of the sparrow, enquired, and came to know the reason.

‘You stupid sparrow! Is this something you can accomplish?’ said Narada.
The sparrow replied, ‘I don’t care whether it is possible or not. If I persevere tenaciously, beyond that it is in God’s hands.’

Narada, delighted with its faith, went to Garuda and told him everything.

Then he said, ‘A creature belonging to your bird tribe is exerting itself with so much faith. Is it proper for you to keep quiet? Can you not help?’
After hearing this story Garuda flew quickly to the sparrow. As soon as he flapped his wings there, all the waters of the ocean separated into two, leaving the egg of the sparrow visible. The sparrow immediately picked it up in its beak and flew away.

Similarly, those who meditate on the Self and do good deeds, if they labour hard without feeling ‘This is a mammoth task! There is no one to help! Is this possible for me?’ then the help of God will come automatically.

Will the waters of the ocean get diminished by the sparrow sucking water through its beak and by its releasing it on the shore? The sparrow performed its task with faith [sraddha] and perseverance. Similarly, if anyone makes an effort, it will not fail to bear fruit at some time or other. For all things faith alone is important. For those who engage in good deeds, if they work with faith, the help of God will come, just as it did through Garuda.
Until it comes one should stay with one's sadhana without any faltering of faith, and with utmost exertion and steadfastness.

When seeking God-realization becomes the sole purpose of life............

Swami Kriyananda narrates incident from Yogananda's life

When it came for living for God, the Master could be quite austere. Heber Kimball, a tall, dignified young man, visited Mount Washington with the intention of joining the monastery. The Master had put me in charge of the monks, so I mentioned Heber's interest to him.

"Tell him from me," the Master replied, "that if he stays here he can find salvation in this lifetime." This was no mean promise!

I encouraged Heber to remain, therefore. The next day, he said to me, "Please ask the Master what I should do about this problem: My parents are growing old. Is it better that I go back, find a job, and take care of them? Or should I remain here?"

I reported the question to Master, who replied very sternly: "That is for him to decide. We want only those here who are hundred percent for God!"

Did Heber stay? Yes, but he didn't remain very long.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
A young woman once addressed a similar question to the Master.  "My mother needs support,"  she said, "Ought I to leave here for her sake, and take a job?"

"Leave at once!" the Master ordered her peremptorily. "Get out! You aren't needed here!"

So dismissive was he that she burst into tears.  "Master" she pleaded "my place is with you.  I don't want to leave!  I will just practice faith in God, that He will attend to her needs."

"That is the right attitude," he replied with a kindly smile.  "When a person gives his life to God, the Lord takes care of every aspect of his life."  The mother came, later on, to Mount Washington, and lived there happily until her death many years later.

They all laughed and they all said, "You don't know the beauty of movement. When the river is flowing, it is alive. But a tank is dead - it is stable.

Osho : "Life is unsafe, insecure - you can die any moment - so why be worried about it? All that you need is to live as totally as possible while you are living.

There are people on the earth - gypsies. That is a strange group that never makes a home. It is always on the move, lives only in tents, and absolutely free. Whenever it wants to change the city, it starts moving its tents, bullock carts.

In my village many gypsies used to pass, and I had asked many of them.... You may be surprised that gypsies are Indians; eighty percent of their language is Hindi, so it was not difficult to talk with them. They became known as gypsies because first they went to Egypt, and from Egypt they spread into Europe. From "Egypt" they got the name "gypsies."

I used to ask them, "Why don't you stay in one place? What is the point of troubling yourself by continuously moving?"

They all laughed and they all said, "You don't know the beauty of movement. When the river is flowing, it is alive. But a tank is dead - it is stable. The river does not know where it is going - that is its surprise... moment to moment the new. Why get caught up with the old?"

All the governments have been trying to provide them with houses so they can stay in one place, so there is no need for this constant movement. But they are not willing. It seems that, in this movement, they have known a certain beauty, a certain freedom.

And I was surprised: they are the most strong people. Their women are so strong, you cannot believe it. All their business is done by their women - their women will sell things on the market.

And if you even ask the price of a knife, you get into trouble!

The gypsy will say, "Five rupees." Naturally, you have to give some offer. You say, "Two rupees." She says, "Okay, take the knife." And if you don't give her the money, she will take hold of your hand - and the gypsy woman is so strong that even a man will not be able to get rid of her.

And they are so beautiful! I have seen so many women, but no comparison with gypsy women. They are beautiful, they are strong; and the men are beautiful, they are strong. Perhaps their continuous wandering, facing new difficulties, new challenges, has created a certain stamina which people living in houses in one place - being a clerk in the office - have lost. These gypsies don't want to lose it, and they can see the difference.

Losing the home... it is a beautiful experience to be homeless, because all the animals are homeless, all that exists is homeless. Only man has created out of his cunning mind some safety measures, which don't help - they simply make him weak, they make him ugly. He is in constant paranoia; and to get rid of that paranoia brings a new upsurge of energy.

So I am in favor of going around the world, moving, so you forget the whole idea of a home. You start having the freedom of a homeless person, and you drop the idea of safety and security... because they don't exist: they are just fictions."

Cleanliness is next to Godliness

When Maa was a little four-year old child, She was cleaning a room and upon finishing, she threw the broom to a corner.

Then She heard the voice of Sri Ramakrishna say, “Hega, you threw that broom? See how beautifully you cleaned the room with that very broom and now you threw it? You must respect your tools as well as your actions. Cleanliness is next to Godliness?”

The four-year-old Little Mother bowed down to the broom. From then on She would bow down to it everyday. Maa said that Thakur Ramakrishna told Her, “If you respect each and every one of your actions, you will get me.”

Shivanga - Becoming a Limb of Shiva

If somebody criticizes your Guru...................

I live in this world as She wishes.

Manomohan (a devotee of Sri Ramakrishna) was normally a quiet, peace-loving person, but he could sometimes be very outspoken, as it was unbearable for him to see or hear anything unjust or improper. One day on his way to Dakshineswar a man made some false and disrespectful remarks about Sri Ramakrishna in front of him. Manomohan became furious and told the man, "One more word and I'll knock you to the ground."

As soon as Manomohan arrived at Dakshineswar, Sri Ramakrishna said to him: "Everyone thinks that his faith is the greatest. If anyone says a word against his faith, he first argues, then becomes angry, and at last loses control and becomes violent."

Manomohan understood that the Master knew everything and that it was impossible to hide anything from him. He humbly explained, "Sir, I cannot bear to hear anyone criticize you." The Master replied: "Whether somebody criticizes me or praises me, that is no one else's business. I am a most insignificant person, so what will that man gain by criticizing me? I have neither the power to give ten jars of gold coins to a person who praises me, nor the power to give ten lashes to a person who censures me. I am a child of the Divine Mother. I live in this world as She wishes."

Sometimes I have given away my last dollar..................................Paramhansa Yogananda

"I own nothing, yet I have everything. Sometimes I have given away my last dollar. But I was never left out. God has always provided for me. I am very rich in that respect, even though poor outside--poor, not by compulsion, but of my own willingness. If I have my Father with me, what riches more can I want? This is the teaching of the East. This is what all Americans need to remember. Behind the dollar, behind all your efforts, is that great Power. And if that Power wishes you have the right job, the right anything, you will have it tomorrow, if you are in tune with God."

Paramahansa Yogananda

In yoga, you don’t chase experience, you only prepare. - Sadhguru.

Sadhguru : If Grace has to transmit itself, you need to have an appropriate body. If you do not have an appropriate body and Grace descends on you big time, you will only fuse out. Many people want big experiences but they are not willing to transform their body to be able to conduct those experiences. So many in the world have lost their minds or broken their bodies because they went experience-hunting.

In yoga, you don’t chase experience, you only prepare. That is how it was with the Saptarishis – the first seven disciples of Adiyogi. They simply prepared and prepared. They never asked for anything. They simply prepared for eighty-four years and when Adiyogi saw that they were so prepared, he couldn’t hold back anything. He had to give it all. But today’s world has become like this – “Sadhguru, I am here for two days, can you enlighten me?”

The yogic systems always focused on the muladhara. It is only in recent times that non-practicing “yogis” have written books and say you must focus on higher chakras. This high and low business is too entrenched in book-reading minds but that is not how life works. Some years ago, I used to conduct two or three-day programs in Hata Yoga. Just doing asanas, people would burst out laughing and crying. Most yogis just use a few simple postures to break the limitations of who they are. That is how Hata Yoga is. Hata Yoga means balance. Balance does not mean sanity. If you want your life to be exuberant, you need to have some madness in you. But if you become compulsively insane, you lost it.

Don't lead the aimless life - Paramhansa Yogananda

Be alone within. Don't lead the aimless life that so many persons follow. Meditate and read good books more.... Once in a while it is all right to go to the movies and have a little social life, but mostly remain apart and live within yourself.... Enjoy solitude; but when you want to mix with others, do so with all your love and friendship, so that those persons cannot forget you, but remember always that they met someone who inspired them and turned their minds toward God.

Something to contemplate for us.

Even though the reality of the Self has been explained in many ways, the truth of it remains unspoken because it can only be known by directly experiencing it. Those who seek liberation are prevented from having this direct experience by their minds which hold onto the deeply-rooted conviction 'I am the body / mind'.

Falling in love with Devi.

Question: Namaskaram Sadhguru. We were fortunate enough to receive a Devi Yantra from you last year. She has completely transformed our home, and she is actually transforming lives in our neighborhood too. There are people who, whether they have to deal with family situations or a divorce or health issues, will come and sit in the Devi room. I am just stunned to see her grace. She has revved it up quite a bit for me, but I am still wondering, how to earn more of her grace?

Sadhguru : The processes that have been taught to you work best if you make Devi your priority. This is not just so with Devi – this is so with anything subjective. Even for a love affair to work, it is a question of priorities. If you regard something or someone as far more important than yourself, that dimension becomes beautiful for you. But if you do that with people, we do not know how mature the other person is. A man who looks at a tree and thinks this is wood may look at a woman and think this is sex, nothing more. The basic consciousness has been trained in such a way that if you see something, you think of how useful it could be to you, in the sense, “What is the takeaway for me?”

A Devi yantra is a powerful energy form that has no intention of its own. You are also an energy form, but you are not able to maintain a particular level of consciousness because the compulsions of your thoughts, your emotions, and your body will rule and contaminate your consciousness. You have seen this with human beings: one moment, they are so wonderful – next moment, they are shockingly horrible.

So we create a powerful form that has no concern about itself and no compulsiveness because this is a pure energy form. The physical form of mercury, copper, and stone is only a scaffolding to hold up the energy form. A yantra is a kind of machine. The Devi machine [yantra] and the Detroit machines [cars] – both of them will take you places. The fundamental difference between an external machine and such an energy form is, the Devi yantra is a perpetual machine that does not need any real maintenance. You just need to create a certain atmosphere because Devi does not want to stay in an uncared-for space.

The Devi yantras are extensions of the mularupa, which means the original energy form, of Linga Bhairavi [next to the Isha Yoga Center]. You can create millions of such yantras across the planet. All of them will be alive as long as the original energy form is kept up in full vibrance. You must hold Devi as the highest entity in your home. If your home catches fire, the first thought on your mind should be how to save Devi. It is not a question of what you do – it is a question of what your priorities are. If Devi is a top priority for you, your receptivity will increase. If you think, “This is just some stone Sadhguru has given. Let’s see what I will get out of it,” at the most, your health will improve. If you become very healthy but you are otherwise a miserable human being, it is a disaster.

Two New York philosophers met in a bar. They started discussing the difference between a misfortune and a disaster. One of them said, “Right now, we are about to have dinner. Suppose the cook dies, you cannot call it a disaster. It’s a misfortune – not that he died, but that we cannot have our dinner.” See, this is a takeaway world. “But let us say all the congressmen of the United States were on a Caribbean cruise and the cruise ship sinks, that is a disaster, but by no stretch is it a misfortune.” This is not my opinion.

You just have to set your priorities straight. You go to a temple, church, or mosque because you believe that by going there, your life will be enhanced. In India, there are various ways to relate to God. You can relate to God as your father; you can relate to God as your mother; you can see God as your husband; you can see God as your lover; you can see God as your child; you can be a servant to God, or you can treat God as your servant, as the whole world does. There are specific practices and ways to be, depending on your choice of relating.

You can relate to Devi whichever way you want, but the important thing is – if you hold her as the highest priority in your home, she will function in a tremendous way. If you think, “She is a tool. Let me leverage it for my benefit,” she still works – but in a mediocre way. If you see her as the highest priority, if you see her as higher than yourself, the kinds of things that will happen will be too phenomenal. Logical minds can never, ever decipher how this works.

To the extent that you intensely relate to this simple, yet very powerfully reverberating form, to that extent it functions. If you relate to it, it becomes the most fabulous thing. To relate means you have become willing. This goes for everything in life – what is horrendous and what is fantastic is just a question of whether you go through it willingly or unwillingly. If you become willing towards something, it becomes a phenomenon.

Receive the yantra during the sacred ceremony on the Pournami night of December 16, 2013 in the presence of Sadhguru. You will be initiated into a powerful process while receiving the yantra directly from him.

God feels that way, too.

We put forth our hands to receive God's gifts of life and sun and food and all the other things He bestows on us; but even as we receive them, we are unmindful of the Giver. If you have lovingly given presents to someone and then find out that he never thinks of you, how hurt you would feel! God feels that way, too.

All of us in the world are seeking peace. But are we serious?

Sadhguru : Before looking at how the world should be, you should look at how you should be within yourself. If you can’t keep yourself peaceful, keeping the world peaceful is just empty talk. Young people, who have their life ahead of them, should first invest a certain amount of time on their inner wellbeing. How you should be within yourself should be a primary concern.

Today, it is entertainment for people to talk about world peace. I
have been to a number of international conferences and what I see is, people simply enjoy talking, they are not serious about what they want to do. Ninety percent of the people seem to be happy that they got a ticket to travel, they are staying in some big hotel, and that’s it! I don’t see the seriousness in people – that they are there because they are interested in creating peace.

This is because violence has its investment and conflict has its benefits. Someone is benefiting from the whole thing and it is a charade that is kept up. Many people have not suffered the pain of conflict, they do not know what it means to really be hit by these things. They only see it on television, as some kind of excitement, seeing bombs blow up and body parts fly all over the place. These kinds of movies are popular. And now, you don’t have to see any movies because it is on the news every day. Somehow, people are not serious about peace, except those who are really hit by its absence.

If this has to change, the first thing a human being has to learn is to be peaceful within himself. As there is a science and technology to create external wellbeing, there is a science and technology to create inner wellbeing.

When Buddha disappeared one night from his palace................................

Osho : When Buddha disappeared one night from his palace, he wanted to tell his wife that, ”I am going.” He wanted to touch the child who was just a day before born, because he would not be back again. He went to the very door of the room. He looked at the wife. She was so fast asleep, must have been dreaming; her face was beautiful, smiling, child in her arms.

Then he waited for few seconds on the door; then he turned. He wanted to say, but then he became afraid. If he said something, then the wife is bound to cry and weep and create a scene And he is afraid of himself also, because if she weeps and cries, then he may become aware of his own promises, that ”I will love you forever and ever, and I will be with you forever and ever.” And
what about this child who is only one day born? And she will, of course, bring the child before me, and she will say, ”Look what you have done to me. Then why you gave birth to this child? And now who will be his father? And am I alone responsible for him? And you are escaping like a coward.”

All these thoughts came to him, because in sleep everybody promises. Everybody goes on giving promises not knowing how he can fulfill them, but in sleep it happens because nobody is conscious what is happening.
Suddenly he became aware that these things will be brought and then the family will gather – and the father and everybody else – and he is the only son of the father, and the father is looking at him, and in his sleep he has promised him also. Then he simply escaped: he simply escaped like a thief.

After twelve years, when he came back, the wife asked him the first thing that had come to his mind that night when he was leaving. The wife asked, ”Why didn’t you tell me? The first thing I would like to ask – for these twelve years I was waiting for you – why didn’t you tell me? What type of love is this? You simply left me. You are a coward.”

And Buddha listened silently. And the wife was silent and he said, ”These all thoughts had come to me. I had come just to the door, I had even opened the door. I looked at you; in sleep I had promised many things. But if I am going to be awake, if I am getting out of the sleep, then I cannot keep the promises given in sleep. And if I try to keep the promises, then I cannot awake.

”So you are right. You may think I am a coward; you may think that I escaped from the palace like a thief, not like a warrior, not like a man of courage. But I tell you, exactly opposite is the case, because when I was escaping, to me at that moment, that was the moment of greatest bravery because my whole being was saying, ’This is not good. Don’t be a coward.’ And if I had stopped, if I had listened to my sleepy being, then there was no possibility for me to awake.

”And now I come to you; now I can fulfill something, because only a man who is enlightened can fulfill. A man who is ignorant, how he can fulfill anything? Now I come to you. That moment if I
had stopped I couldn’t give you anything, but now I bring a great treasure with me, and now I can give it to you. Don’t weep, don’t cry; open the eyes and look at me. I am not the same man who
had left that night. A totally different being has come to your door.

I am not your husband. You may be my wife, because that is your attitude. Look at me – I am totally a different person. Now I bring
treasures for you. I can make you also aware and enlightened.”
The wife listened. The same problem always came to everybody. She started thinking about the child. If she becomes a sannyasin and moves with this beggar – her ex-husband, now he is a beggar
– if she moves... and what will happen to the child? She has not said anything, but Buddha said, ”I know what you are thinking, because I have passed that period where promises given in the sleepy state all crowd together and say, ’What are you doing? – your child...’ You are thinking that, ’Let the child become a little more aged, let him be married, then he can take over the palace and the kingdom,’ and then you will follow.

But remember, there is no future, no tomorrow. Either you follow
me right now or you don’t follow me.”

So Buddha said, ”I know what you are thinking, and I know you are a greater dreamer than me. But now I have come to cut all the roots of your sleep. Bring the child. Where is my son? Bring him.”

The feminine mind played a trick again. She brought Rahul, the child who was twelve years of age now, and she said, ”This is your father. Look at him – he has become a beggar – and ask him what is your heritage, what he can give to you. This is your father; he is a coward! He escaped like a thief not even telling me, and he left a one-day-old child. Ask him your heritage!”

Buddha laughed, and he told Ananda, ”Bring my begging bowl.” And he gave the begging bowl to Rahul, and he said, ”This is my heritage. I make you a beggar. You are initiated. You become a
sannyasin.” And he said to his wife, ”I cut the very root. Now there is no need to dream. You also awake because this was the root. Rahul is already a sannyasin; you also awake. Yashodhara, you
also awake, and become a sannyasin.”

The moment always comes when you are in the transit period from where sleep turns into awakening. The whole past will hold you back, and past is powerful.
Future is powerless for a sleepy man.
For a man who is not sleepy, future is powerful;
for a man who is fast asleep, past is powerful, because a man who is fast asleep knows only dreams that he had dreamed in the past. He is not aware of any future. Even if he thinks about future, it is nothing but past reflected again; it is just past projected again.

Only a man who is aware becomes aware of the future. Then past is nothing.

The Significance of Kalabhairava -- The Most Fearsome Form of Shiva

Friday, November 22, 2013

Those lines "Whatever happens in my life, It is my karma." Does it have any significance? Sadhguru explores.

Sadhguru : We have always been a diverse culture and
we have managed this diversity very well, mainly
because of the fundamental spiritual ethos where
we always saw that whoever and whatever you
may be, is your making. “It is your karma” means
it is your making. Because of this, you are driving a
Mercedes – I am walking on the street, and there is
no resentment.

Tarun Tahiliani: Do you subscribe to this prevalent
thought that it is your karma? I don’t think that this
is my karma.

Sadhguru:No. When I say “karma,” I mean
whatever I am is my making. It is a most dynamic
way to exist. Slowly, this most dynamic way to exist
has been corrupted to become a fatalistic existence.
If I tell someone who is not doing well “This is God’s
will,” he simply has no choice – that is the way he
has to be. When I say, “It’s your making,” it means
he can make it something else if he wishes. When
we said, “It is your karma,” it means everything that
you are is 100% your making. That means you have
to create your own life.

This has been partially and
conveniently misunderstood to a certain point, but
still it has kept people free of resentment, anger, and
hatred. That is why India is incapable of a revolution.

Tarun Tahiliani:So far at least, yes. I would agree.

Sadhguru:Yes. Once we lose this spiritual ethos, if
even the terminology disappears from day-to-day
culture, which is beginning to happen…. I don’t
think today’s generation is even using the word
“karma” anymore.

My grandmother said for every
little thing, “Ayyo! It’s his karma – my karma – your karma.”
My mother said it much less.
I am speaking to people in a different way,
but the next generation is barely talking about it.

Once this disappears, resentment will grow in people.

Resentment and anger can lead to a revolution. A revolution can
sometimes lead to wellbeing, but it usually only
replaces one tyrant with another set of tyrants.

We are beginning to believe, and many people
today in the political sphere are talking in those
terms, that anger is the only propelling force for
change. We never used to see it that way in this
nation. For thousands of years, we have seen that
you can propel change out of sheer human longing
to be better. Every human being is constantly
longing to be a little better than he is right now.
Just that longing is enough to transform a society,
an individual, and the whole situation – if only
you create a situation where everyone has the
opportunity to find expression to that longing.
Otherwise, if major change has to happen, it has
to happen with anger, brutality, and blood. People
have gone to the extent of saying that only blood and
tears move the wheels of history. It need not be so.
Human love, human compassion, human ingenuity,
human intelligence can truly move the wheels of
history, and that is what is happening in modern
times. Information technology and other aspects
are a clear manifestation that human ingenuity can
change the world. It need not necessarily happen
with blood and gore.

Existence cannot be forced to go according to you; it flows in its own way. If you can flow with it, you will be positive. - Osho

I was staying in a village rest house. It was a very poor village, but it was filled with many dogs. They all gathered in the night around the rest house; it must have been their usual habit. The rest house was a good place – big trees, shadows, and they must have been resting there every night. So I was staying there, and one minister of a particular state was staying there. The minister became very much disturbed because the dogs were barking, creating much nuisance. Half the night passed and the minister couldn’t sleep, so he came to me.

He said, ”Are you asleep?” I was fast asleep, so he came near to me, made me wake up and asked me, ”Please tell me how you could fall into sleep amid such noises all around. At least twenty to thirty dogs are there, and they are fighting and barking and doing everything that dogs ordinarily do. So what to do? I cannot sleep, and I am so tired after the whole day’s journey. If I cannot sleep, it will be difficult for me. The next day I have to go again on a tour, and I will leave early in the morning. Sleep doesn’t seem to come, and I have tried all the methods I have learned and heard about – chanting a mantra, praying to God, etc. I have done everything, but nothing happens, so what to do now?”

So I told him, ”Those dogs are not gathered here for you or to disturb you. They are not even aware that a minister is staying here; they do not read newspapers. They are completely ignorant. They are not here purposefully, they are not concerned with you. They are doing their work. Why are you getting disturbed?”

So he said, ”Why should I not? How not to? With so much barking, how can I go into sleep?”

So I told him, ”Do not fight with the barking. You are fighting – that is the problem, not the noise. The noise is not disturbing you, you are disturbing yourself because of the noise. You are against the noise, so you have a condition. You are saying, ’If the dogs stop barking, then I will sleep.’ The dogs won’t listen to you. You have a condition. You feel that if the condition is fulfilled, then you can sleep. This condition is disturbing you. Accept dogs! Do not make a condition that ’If they stop barking, then I will sleep.’ Just accept.

”Dogs are there and they are barking; do not resist, do not fight, do not try to forget those noises. Accept them and listen to them, they are beautiful. The night is so silent, and they are barking so vitally – just listen. This will be the mantra, the right mantra: just listen to them.”

So he said, ”Okay! I do not believe that this will help, but as there is nothing else to do, I will try.” He fell asleep, and the dogs were still barking. In the morning he said, ”This is miraculous. I accepted them; I withdrew my condition. I listened. Those dogs became very musical, and their barking, their noise, was not disturbing. Rather, it became a sort of lullaby, and I fell into deep sleep because of it.”

It depends on your mind. If you are positive, then everything becomes positive. If you are negative, then everything turns negative, everything turns sour. So please remember this -not only about noises, but about everything in life. If you feel that something negative exists around you, go and find the cause within. It is you. You must be expecting something, you must be desiring something, you must be making some conditions.

Existence cannot be forced to go according to you; it flows in its own way. If you can flow with it, you will be positive. If you fight with it, you will become negative and the whole cosmos around you will turn negative.

The play of Devotion

The first building of the Madras Monastery cracked in several places within a couple of years of its construction. When it rained, water would come down through the fissures in the roof. At such times Swami Ramakrishnananda would go into the shrine to see whether water was leaking through the ceiling.

One night it began to drip inside the shrine too, right on Sri Ramakrishna's picture. Swami Ramakrishnanda stood there holding an umbrella till the night passed and the rain stopped. He did not remove the picture to a safer side because that would wake his Master from sleep at an untimely hour, which would be wrong."

THERE IS A POSSIBLITY OF COMMUNICATION BETWEEN MAN AND TREES

Osho : I used to sit by the side of a river in my village, under a small tree. It was the same kind of tree under which Gautam Buddha became enlightened, and because of Gautam Buddha’s enlightenment, the tree’s name has become the bodhi tree. I used to sit under this bodhi tree by the riverside for hours. It must have been almost the middle of the night, a full moon night, and we had become such friends….

Just that day one of my teachers had told me, “I hear that you are saying to people that there is a possibility of communication between man and trees?”

I said, “Yes.”

He said, “Don’t spread strange ideas for which you don’t have any proof.”

I took him with me on that full moon night and I told him, “You touch the tree and just tell me how you feel.”

He said, “It is cold.”

And I said to the tree, in front of the teacher, “It is a question of your friend’s word. I want you to respond in some way. And the easiest will be that when my teacher puts his hand on you, show your warmth, don’t be cold.”

The teacher said, “You must be mad, you are talking with the tree!”

But I said, “There is no harm in trying. The tree is willing – I feel the willingness all around. You put your hand there.”

He said, “I don’t believe that there is any possibility of communication.” But he put his hand on the tree and was shocked – the tree was so warm, and it was a cold night.

He said, “My God, now you have got me also into trouble! Everybody thinks you are a little bit crazy, now what about me?”

I said, “You are my disciple – first disciple! Just start spreading the news that….”

He said, “I have never done such a thing…but I will have to do it because I have experienced it myself.”

He told others and everybody laughed. And I never wanted so many people to hear, because I was not certain how much the tree liked people, who she liked, who she did not like, whether she liked to be in a crowd or just to be alone, standing high in the sky – or perhaps just with a chosen few friends.

Thrice he repeated the offer. None accepted. Then he said: 'The offer is withdrawn'. Incident from Swami Ramdas life.

TAKE THE WHOLE, IT IS THERE FOR THE TAKING!

Q: Since you have found your freedom, will you not give me a little of it?

M: Why little? Take the whole. Take it, it is there for the taking. But you are afraid of freedom!

Q: Swami Ramdas had to deal with a similar request. Some devotees collected round him one day and began to ask for liberation. Ramdas listened smilingly and then suddenly he became serious and said: You can have it, here and now, freedom absolute and permanent. Who wants it, come forward. Nobody moved. Thrice he repeated the offer. None accepted. Then he said: 'The offer is withdrawn'.

M: Attachment destroys courage. The giver is always ready to give. The taker is absent. Freedom means letting go. People just do not care to let go everything. They do not know that the finite is the price of the infinite, as death is the price of immortality. Spiritual maturity lies in the readiness to let go everything. The giving up is the first step. But the real giving up is in realising that there is nothing to give up, for nothing is your own. It is like deep sleep -- you do not give up your bed when you fall sleep -- you just forget it.

Lessons from Meher Baba

One episode of this trip revealed to us Baba's benevolent attitude toward suffering. When we reached the top of the mountain, a poor emaciated dog came limping from the bushes toward the group. His face was almost eaten away by some disease. The only visible eye looked pathetically at us, as he whined miserably.

A couple of the younger women cried out hysterically and involuntarily drew back from him. Baba instantly came forward and, leaning down, gently placed his hand upon the running sores. The dog sat down on his haunches and turned his face up to Baba, obviously grateful for the healing balm which was being poured upon him. His whine changed into a deep sigh of contentment as the hand of the God-man wiped away the intolerable pain.

Turning to the group Baba admonished: "If you can do nothing to help suffering, don't make it worse by indulging your emotions."

Making of a Hata Yogi -- Isha Hata Yoga Teacher Training Program

Sadhguru : The training is structured to see that, slowly transform to you, not a Hata Yoga Teacher, but into a Yogi. Because in my perception, ultimately only One, who is Yoga, should transmit Yoga. Only than it will be a real thing. Not that you learned Yoga, not that you know Yoga, but You are Yoga.

Just throw your heavenly spiritual experiences in the TRASH-CAN

"One day I said to Mother (Sri Anandamayi Ma),—”Ma, all these days the Mantric Sounds 'Arise' in me in a continuous stream. In the daytime as well as at dead of night the Flow of the Sound -naturally Wells out of My Heart, like the gushing jets of a fountain.”

When I said it, some 'slight tinge of personal satisfaction' lurked in the inmost recess of my heart. Mother gazed at me and said nothing. When I reached home, the Sound 'ceased' and in spite of my best efforts, I could not revive it. The day passed and night wore on, but the 'joyful stream' of Mantric melody could not be restored.

Next morning I requested Bhupen to inform Mother about my sad plight. Bhupen met Mother on the way while She was proceeding to a devotee’s house in a carriage. She began to laugh. It was 10 A.M. Just at 'that moment' I found that the choked-up Stream began 'To Flow' with its former ease.

I came to know from Bhupen afterwards at what time he had met Mother. In this connection, Mother 'was heard' to observe that in Spiritual matters, even the 'slightest tinge' of I-ness retards one’s progress."

*** OSHO AGREES TO VISIT A BISTRO & HARSHAD WAS STUNNED ***

I used to come to Bombay, before I settled in Bombay, almost two or three times per month because the headquarters were in Bombay, the whole work was there. There I had the greatest following; and the most intelligent people in India of course are in Bombay. Slowly thousands of people started knowing me. One day one of my sannyasins -- at that time I had not started sannyas but now he is a sannyasin.... He used to drive me about, and just jokingly -- he did not mean it, but he was not fully aware of me -- just before a bistro he stopped the car and said, "Osho, would you like to come in and have an ice cream?"

Ice cream I used to love. To tell you the truth I still love it, although there is no way to find it anywhere. I said, "That's a great idea!" Then he became afraid. He had been joking. He had said it thinking that a religious man would say no to going into a bistro, where an almost naked woman was doing a striptease dance. He said, "Are you sure?"

I said, "Absolutely! Just open the door -- because this is my last life. After this life there is no bistro for me and no ice cream: I don't want to miss the last chance." He waited for a few seconds. I said, "For what are you waiting?"

He said, "But if somebody sees you there, and recognizes you there...."

I said, "That is my problem."

He said, "No, it is not your problem -- they will kill me, they will say 'It is you who took him; otherwise how could he find that bistro? You were supposed to take him home from the meeting place, not to a bistro.'"

I said, "Don't be worried. I will protect you and say that I insisted, that seeing the signboard, 'Bistro,' I said, 'What is this? -- I want to know.'"

He said, "Then it is okay. But, Osho, you are creating a very troubled state for me."

I said, "Don't be worried -- just come on."

I had to enter first, then he followed me; he had to follow. It was an air-conditioned place, but he was perspiring.

I said, "Harshad" -- Harshad was his name -- "your name means rejoice. What a fool -- rejoice!"

And what he was afraid of happened. The manager of the bistro had heard me: he came and fell at my feet. Harshad was just going into a nervous breakdown. Everything stopped; even the striptease dancer stopped -- everything was frozen. When the manager fell at my feet, other customers who had no idea who I was started coming to touch my feet and the striptease girl came down from the stage. I said, "Harshad, it seems even in this life it is not going to be possible." I told the manager, "At least bring my ice cream."

He said, "Will you accept one?"

I said, "Accept? I am ordering one: I like tutti-frutti." I was eating my ice cream and the whole crowd was standing around me. I said, "What are you doing? Do your business!" And Harshad was hiding behind the crowd because if the manager saw him....

As I finished my ice cream he came and just grabbed me. He told me, "Osho, out! I will never drive you again if you do such a thing."

I said, "But what have I done? I have not created any problem for anyone. You had asked me,'Would you like some ice cream?' so I ordered one. And in all this hullaballoo they have not asked for the bill. Go and pay it.

He said, "I am not going inside again. I cannot go alone; if you come ahead of me...."

I said, "Then don't bother, because nobody is thinking of the bill right now. We enjoyed them, they enjoyed us, and it is balanced. There is nothing much to be worried about. But where have you been hiding? I had to eat two long glasses full of ice cream because the manager had brought the best, the biggest glasses. Where were you? I had to eat two glasses, and two glasses that size are a little too much."

He continued to drive me, but whenever there was a bistro or anything, he would go so fast. I would say, "Harshad, a bistro!" and he would say, "Never again!"

People came to know somehow and he had a good beating from everybody. In Bombay, in those days there were many old people who were followers of mine, very respected people: somebody was an ex-mayor, somebody was ex-sheriff, somebody was a minister. I told everybody, "Nobody is to harass Harshad; he has been punished enough." He had perspired and begun trembling, but I simply enjoyed it; the whole scene was so fabulous. And for the striptease girl this was an absolutely new act. She may never have done it before and will never have to do it again.

Book - From Personality To Individuality
Chapter # 28
Chapter Name - Knowledge Is Information, Knowing Is Transformation

Travel at the speed of light and you will become light. Travel at the pace that I move, and you will become me. - Sadhguru

Just do everything with the same sense of involvement and energy, without paying less attention to one thing and more attention to something else.

Questioner : Sadhguru, this sounds awkward, but I'd like to say it. I want to become like you. Is there such a possibility for me?

Sadhguru : Grow a beard like me. (Laughs) Yesterday, somebody asked me a similar question in a different way, and I just reminded them that there is a simple phenomenon in life, in physical existence, that they should be aware of. If you know some physics, you know there that if, for example, if you take this piece of metal and throw it at the speed of light, it will not remain a mass as it is now; it will become light. Did you know this?

Anything in existence, if it travels at the speed of light, it becomes light. So everything in existence can be converted into light; if I just move this hand at the speed of light, this hand will no more remain a hand, it will become light. This is a scientific fact.

If you try to plug yourself into a electric socket - like the light bulb - it will do something else to you! You will not become light. So, whatever you consider to be Sadhguru, right now - I do not know what your idea of me is; that is also questionable - if a desire has risen within you, for whatever reason, that you want to become me, then you have to move at the same pace has me.

A very beautiful example was set by Adi Shankara. Adi Shankara was a walking man, you know? He died at the age of thirty-two, but before this he walked up and down this country three times. He even walked the country once or twice sideways, east and west. That is a lot of walking, isn't it? By the time he was thirty two he did all this walking. But it wasn't the walking that killed him, by the way!

When he walked his disciples walked behind him. And he set up this device. He demanded that the disciples should walk at his pace. Sometimes he walked very fast, sometimes slow, sometimes at medium speed. Whichever way he walked, everybody was expected to walk at just the same pace. If they walked at the wrong pace, they were reprimanded. He would walk ten miles an hour and everybody had to walk ten miles an hour. He would walk one mile an hour and everybody had to walk one mile an hour. He would walk three miles an hour and everybody had to walk three miles an hour. He would be walking at a certain speed, then he would alter his speed, and everybody had to alter their speed. This was a simple way to train his disciples to become him. It was a very physical tool. By simply doing that, he transformed the people who walked behind him.

So if a desire has risen within you that you want to become me, you must start from the end that you know. You cannot start from the end that you do not know. You must have noticed that this morning our meeting started at twelve noon. It is ten pm now; it has been going on continuously for ten hours. Before that we had two or three hours of telephonic meetings. this meeting may continue through the night until tomorrow morning, and I will sit here and go through all that it demands. I will sit here the whole night. I will just be going on with what I have to do, without any irritation, without any agitation; I will just do what i have to do with total involvement.

So start from this end.
Learn to conduct the day - no matter what the quality of the day, no matter what kind of people you meet, what kind of situation you face - with the same sense of involvement, with the same dedication to little things and big things.

Just do everything with the same sense of involvement and energy, without paying less attention to one thing and more attention to something else.

Pay total attention to everything. Start from this end. It can happen. Just do that.

Did you ever see me paying less attention to one person and more attention to another person?

Or did you see me pay more attention to one issue than the other?

You did not. And whatever the situations have been, or whatever the kind of people, you did not see me getting irritated or agitated. Start from that end.

Travel at the speed of light and you will become light. Travel at the pace that I move, and you will become me.

The Lord of this Universe : " Oh, that is what I have been waiting for from My child! "

Never accept discouragement or defeat in any aspect of your spiritual life. Keep on with your daily sadhana no matter what.

Whenever I had periods when my heart felt dry and I wasn't having good meditations, I said: "Never mind, Lord, I will not give up. You will see, I will shake the walls of Your silence until You do respond! I am here, and I will not change my resolve. I will never leave You."

The seeker after God has to convince Him, and then the Lord says: "That devotee means it. That devotee cannot be sidetracked from the path or tempted by offerings of the lesser goals of the world. That devotee wants Me. Oh, that is what I have been waiting for from My child!"

*** This Guarantees that you do not return to this earth *** Robert Adams

Do not think you're so important that you have to overcome a problem. That is all you're doing when you think you have a problem to overcome. It makes you feel important. I've got to solve this problem, I've got to overcome this situation. As if 'I' is somebody important. 'I' doesn't exist. If 'I' doesn't exist neither does your problem. You know by now that your problem exists because you believe in your 'I'. When you realize 'I' does not exist everything disappears. This is what I mean when I tell you sometimes, there are no problems, there never were any problems and there never will be any problems. But as soon as you begin to think there are problems. Even while you're sitting here listening to me, if you allow your mind to think doesn't a problem come up in your life that you're thinking about, that you think is so important at the present time?

But if you were spontaneous and live in the eternal present, the eternal now, forget about the past, don't worry about the future but live in this particular second, in this second there are no problems. If you can only stay in this split second, no-one is hungry, no-one is ill, no-one is in need, no-one is suffering. As you begin to stay in that split second, this split second expands into a minute, into two minutes, into ten minutes and as you abide in it, it turns into eternity. You are always in that split second where nothing is happening. Where no thing is taking place. That split second is bliss, pure intelligence, absolute reality and you are that.

So again, it begins when you get up in the morning. You observe the 'I'. You watch yourself thinking I got up, I just woke up.

But now here's the catch, do not allow the 'I' to go any further.

As soon as you watch yourself saying, "I just woke up". Try to catch yourself and ask yourself the question, "Who is the 'I' that just woke up?" For in that split second prior to awakening you were in bliss, no thoughts. But as soon as you begin to think of the 'I', the world comes into play. In that split second before I came along you were awake. Yet there was no world, there were no people, there was no universe, there were no problems. In that split second. But as soon as you began to think of 'I' your troubles began. Because you're thinking about the day, I'm hungry, I have to take a shower. I have to get dressed and I begins to do its mischief. That is why it's very important to observe the 'I' coming out.

If you can really observe it you will see that the 'I' is coming out of your spiritual heart on the right side of your chest. But a funny thing will happen. As you observe it, it will go back, isn't that interesting? As you observe the 'I' or as you question it, "Where did the 'I' come from?" It will stop. It will stop its procedure, it will stop its journey to the brain where you become body conscious. All these things happen in a split second. So you have to be aware, you have to be alert, you have to watch for it.

I admit it takes some effort in the beginning but it's well worth it. Think about this again.

Just before you awaken to the 'I', you are already awake in that split second. In that split second there is no world but you are awake, you are conscious, you're totally happy, you're totally self-realized in that split second. But then the 'I' begins its journey from the heart to the brain.

Now if you can observe the 'I' and question its authority, it will lose its momentum and slow down. And begin to return to the heart. If you can get it to return to the heart, you will be conscious but you will be liberated.

You will go about your business like you always do. You will take your shower, you will eat your breakfast, it will all happen spontaneously. There will be no thoughts. The only experience you will have is total bliss. Total happiness, total joy and yet your body will go about it's business. It can happen all at once or it can take time. But it's worth the effort isn't it? Even if it takes you a lifetime, at least you will be free at that time. What is more important than this?

Can anything be more important than this?

This guarantees that you do not return to this earth. It guarantees that while you are alive in your body, so-to-speak, you will be a jivan-mukta, self-realized in the body. This is your only salvation. But you've got to do it. These teachings used to be handed out by the Rishis from mouth to mouth to explain it. It is most difficult to comprehend the books. Even though some of them are very clear... (tape break then Robert continues) ...something within that knows what to do to make it happen. But if you try to understand with your brain, with your head, you will forget. And when tomorrow morning comes you will get up and your 'I' will take over immediately. You will say I'm late for work, I'm in a hurry, I'm this and I'm that and you will forget everything we're talking about this evening. But if you are listening with your heart, when tomorrow morning comes you will spontaneously be able to catch yourself. I will repeat again how to do this. When you first open your eyes, in that split second you are conscious. The 'I' has not risen yet, but remember it's all happening in a second. So you've got to be aware, you've got to be awake, intelligent. Watch and you will notice that the 'I' begins very faintly and becomes stronger. You can shout out, "Who are you?" That's the same as saying, "Who am I?" Who gave you permission to awaken? Observe, watch. The 'I' will begin to lose momentum. The 'I' will become weaker and weaker. The way it usually happens with people, with most people, is they're able to catch it for maybe a few seconds and then the 'I' will take over completely.

Do not be disappointed, that is the worst thing you can do.

It has taken most people years, centuries perhaps to go all the way. Be happy with what you've got. But as you begin to do this practice diligently, everyday, that split second where you observe the 'I', will expand into a full second, into two-seconds, into three-seconds. In other words for those three-seconds you will be self-realized to an extent. You will be conscious, period. You will not be conscious of this or that, you will be conscious. And you will feel something you never felt before, a joy. You will know you're on the right track. Then when the 'I' takes over completely you can get up and go about your business and ask yourself, "Who am I? What is the source of the 'I'?" During the day as the thoughts come to you, be receptive, be alert, question, "To whom do these thoughts come?" They come to me, "Who's me? Who am I? What is the source of the 'I'?" Practice that all day. The next morning you do the same thing. If you do this my friends I can assure you, things will begin to happen to you that you never dreamed possible. May you all experience bliss and your true Self. ~ Robert Adams
