Sadhguru : Here in Isha, Dhyanalinga is that tower of energy.
I do not know how many of you experience it that
way. One lady from the United States said, “All I
see is one big black peanut.” Since this phenomenal
tower of energy has to last very long, it has to be
subtle. Anything that you make outwardly energetic,
like Devi, will not last long, unless you maintain it
every day. You must recharge her on a daily basis –
otherwise, she will not live. That is why those who
are around Devi need a lot more dedication and
devotion to keep her going.

People who take care of the Dhyanalinga temple
only take care of the temple, the premises, and
the people who come. They do not take care of
Dhyanalinga in any sense, because he does not need
any care. If no one takes care of him, he will still be
the same. This is a completely different format. But
with the Devi temple, it is not just the temple and
the people – Devi herself is being taken care of on a
daily basis. And if you do not take care of her well,
she will go into a fit. I hope they will have the sense
to see to it that she does not go into a fit.

is positioned the way she is. Everything else we
create now, wherever we put it in the world, also
draws sustenance from that. Dhyanalinga is a fullfledged life.
Practically, there are difficulties, but in
theory, if we want, we can build a body of flesh and
bone for him, and make him come alive. When we
explored these things in great detail about 20 years
ago, during the Wholeness Program in 1994, people
said, “Sadhguru, you must make him alive.” I said,
“No,” because if you make him alive, then he will
have to go for dinner; he will want to sleep. All the
problems that you and I have, he will also have.

Devi exists by drawing sustenance from the main

to Dhyanalinga on full moon days and makes that
contact. No matter if rain is pouring, there is a flood,
or whatever else – she must still come. Whoever
will be around must maintain that, because this is
essential for her. Not that there are no other ways
to stay in contact with Dhyanalinga – there are –
but the procession is an important part. She has
to constantly stay in touch with Dhyanalinga –
otherwise, she will deplete. She likes to be strong,
energetic, and beautiful – if you make her deplete,
she will go into a fit. No one should be around when
she goes into a fit.

Question: Namaskaram Sadhguru. We were fortunate enough to receive a Devi Yantra from you last year. She has completely transformed our home, and she is actually transforming lives in our neighborhood too. There are people who, whether they have to deal with family situations or a divorce or health issues, will come and sit in the Devi room. I am just stunned to see her grace. She has revved it up quite a bit for me, but I am still wondering, how to earn more of her grace?

Sadhguru : The processes that have been taught to you work best if you make Devi your priority. This is not just so with Devi – this is so with anything subjective. Even for a love affair to work, it is a question of priorities. If you regard something or someone as far more important than yourself, that dimension becomes beautiful for you. But if you do that with people, we do not know how mature the other person is. A man who looks at a tree and thinks this is wood may look at a woman and think this is sex, nothing more. The basic consciousness has been trained in such a way that if you see something, you think of how useful it could be to you, in the sense, “What is the takeaway for me?”

A Devi yantra is a powerful energy form that has no intention of its own. You are also an energy form, but you are not able to maintain a particular level of consciousness because the compulsions of your thoughts, your emotions, and your body will rule and contaminate your consciousness. You have seen this with human beings: one moment, they are so wonderful – next moment, they are shockingly horrible.

So we create a powerful form that has no concern about itself and no compulsiveness because this is a pure energy form. The physical form of mercury, copper, and stone is only a scaffolding to hold up the energy form. A yantra is a kind of machine. The Devi machine [yantra] and the Detroit machines [cars] – both of them will take you places. The fundamental difference between an external machine and such an energy form is, the Devi yantra is a perpetual machine that does not need any real maintenance. You just need to create a certain atmosphere because Devi does not want to stay in an uncared-for space.

The Devi yantras are extensions of the mularupa, which means the original energy form, of Linga Bhairavi [next to the Isha Yoga Center]. You can create millions of such yantras across the planet. All of them will be alive as long as the original energy form is kept up in full vibrance. You must hold Devi as the highest entity in your home. If your home catches fire, the first thought on your mind should be how to save Devi. It is not a question of what you do – it is a question of what your priorities are. If Devi is a top priority for you, your receptivity will increase. If you think, “This is just some stone Sadhguru has given. Let’s see what I will get out of it,” at the most, your health will improve. If you become very healthy but you are otherwise a miserable human being, it is a disaster.

Two New York philosophers met in a bar. They started discussing the difference between a misfortune and a disaster. One of them said, “Right now, we are about to have dinner. Suppose the cook dies, you cannot call it a disaster. It’s a misfortune – not that he died, but that we cannot have our dinner.” See, this is a takeaway world. “But let us say all the congressmen of the United States were on a Caribbean cruise and the cruise ship sinks, that is a disaster, but by no stretch is it a misfortune.” This is not my opinion.

You just have to set your priorities straight. You go to a temple, church, or mosque because you believe that by going there, your life will be enhanced. In India, there are various ways to relate to God. You can relate to God as your father; you can relate to God as your mother; you can see God as your husband; you can see God as your lover; you can see God as your child; you can be a servant to God, or you can treat God as your servant, as the whole world does. There are specific practices and ways to be, depending on your choice of relating.

You can relate to Devi whichever way you want, but the important thing is – if you hold her as the highest priority in your home, she will function in a tremendous way. If you think, “She is a tool. Let me leverage it for my benefit,” she still works – but in a mediocre way. If you see her as the highest priority, if you see her as higher than yourself, the kinds of things that will happen will be too phenomenal. Logical minds can never, ever decipher how this works.

To the extent that you intensely relate to this simple, yet very powerfully reverberating form, to that extent it functions. If you relate to it, it becomes the most fabulous thing. To relate means you have become willing. This goes for everything in life – what is horrendous and what is fantastic is just a question of whether you go through it willingly or unwillingly. If you become willing towards something, it becomes a phenomenon.

Doorway to the Beyond

In India, people use deities in very powerful ways. Any number of Devi worshippers are there, when they sit in front of the Devi, they have a tremendous insight into various aspects of life, but once they step out, they will be innocent of what they uttered just a little while ago. I remember when I was about nine years of age, I was in Guntakal in Andhra Pradesh. I was studying there for two years. There was one lady on the street side with one little temple, an old lady with dreadlocked hair. She must have been over eighty years of age and she was small, like a sparrow. I remember this very well. I went there with my grandmother who was a kind of a meditation initiator herself. A guru had given my grandmother a mantra and she would in turn initiate people. Some families kept her as their Guru Maa. In very close circles, people used to call her ‘Mysore Amma’ because she spent a certain segment of her life in Mysore. But that was not her known name.

My grandmother and I went and sat inside this little temple. It was small, built with brick and stone. This lady who was taking care of the temple went into a trance-like state sitting in front of her Devi. She started making all kinds of sounds, ‘Haauu, Haauu’ and then she said ‘Mysore Amma! Mysore Amma!’ This is not a name that anybody could just know, and she began saying all kinds of things about my grandmother in front of me. My grandmother was so embarrassed — already I was so much trouble to her. My grandmother tried to interfere and say, ‘No, no, no! It’s not like that!’ but this old woman just kept on ‘Aaaiyee, Aaaiyee!’ and told her to shut up. She went on saying so many very embarrassing truths about my grandmother.

In the past, I have repeatedly spoken of Dhyanalinga being a doorway. If you know how to open it, it will open the whole cosmos to you.

Ramanujan was a brilliant mathematician from Tamil Nadu. He had very little formal education, he was mostly self-taught, but he went to Cambridge to work with various mathematicians there. When I say mathematics, you need to understand it is not a school subject. You can convert the whole creation into numbers; that is mathematics. It took years for great mathematicians in the world to understand his work. He did many theorems and said they were given to him by ‘Namagiri’ – his deity. He had initially refused to travel outside India, but later agreed when his mother received permission from Namagiri for him to go to England in a dream.

While on his death-bed in 1920, Ramanujan wrote a letter to his mentor, English mathematician GH Hardy outlining several new mathematical functions never before heard of. In his own words – “While asleep, I had an unusual experience. There was a red screen formed by flowing blood, as it were. I was observing it. Suddenly a hand began to write on the screen. I became all attention. That hand wrote a number of elliptic integrals. They stuck to my mind. As soon as I woke up, I commited them to writing.” In the last 90 years, nobody understood what his theorem was, but they knew it was something tremendous. Only in 2010 did they find out that this theorem describes various behaviors of black holes. Ninety years ago, no one was talking about black holes, the term did not even exist, but Ramanujan made a mathematical impression for it sitting on his death bed and he said ‘my Devi’ gave it to me. When Ramanujan says, ‘Devi gave it to me’, for him Devi is the doorway.

Isha Yoga is a doorway by itself. Almost everybody who comes to Isha Yoga opens it a crack and says, ‘Wow!’ — and then they shut it. You see this happening with everybody around you, including yourself. They open it and say ‘Wow!’ then close it again. They had a good enough peep. You need to open it and keep it open. That’s the thing.

Vidyarambam - Introducing the child in the process of learning

Vidyarambam is a traditional ceremony, which introduces young children into the world of knowledge, letters, and the process of learning. It is exclusively designed for children to begin their education and brings forth the wealth of true knowledge. Devi is a Living Entity - Sadhguru

The reason why many people are able to feel the Devi temple much more than the Dhyanalinga temple is simply because She is physically manifest. Dhyanalinga is subtle; it takes a certain receptivity to feel it. It is of a completely different dimension. Devi is physically manifest – She is even capable of slapping you in the face. She can also do pleasant things, but She can even slap you in the face. Yes, I am telling you, fifty fingers may be left on your face. So, is Devi manifest? She very much is. Is She physically manifest? Very much. As far as I am concerned, She is a living entity for me and for many people.

So, what should I do to experience Devi? You don’t have to do anything. If there is not much of you, you will feel the presence of what is not you. If there is too much of you, you won’t feel anything anywhere. Not just here, anywhere. Devi is difficult to miss. If your vision is normal, we could write ‘A-B-C’ in big letters and you could read it. Right now, Devi is like that. She is for people who won’t get anything else – Big Bhairavi – you cannot miss her. It is very simple and easy. But most people are like this – they have not even felt their breath themselves. So for such people, if your heart is beating – dubu, dubu – if you cannot even feel this, how can you feel anything else?

 There are people who have not felt their heartbeat, there are people who have not felt their own breath, there are people who cannot see the full moon. If you don’t notice a mosquito biting, your heart beating, your breathing…if you don’t notice how food behaves within you, how will you notice Devi? Fifty finger marks should fall on your face. If you want, we can also do that. I am not joking. We can do it, but it will hurt. There are a few things which have manifested in some people’s lives with Bhairavi which are very strange and, probably, they would not want to talk about it, so I will leave that alone, but things have happened. But the problem with most people is – they are already imagining something.

Don’t imagine anything. Imagination is not good for experience. If you think imagination is a substitute for your experience, it is a stupid way to live. Imagination will feel pleasant for some time – if it goes out of control, you will go nuts. Experience is different. Experience transforms life. With imagination, you can go to heaven in two minutes and come back and you are in the same place – a little depressed because you are back. Not that kind. Real life experience. Physically manifest experience. It is very much possible.

So…devotion. It is not because you are singing for Devi or loving Her that She will appear. She is always there. It is just that with devotion, you are trying to wear yourself down. Who you are is becoming less and less as your devotion overflows. She doesn’t care whether you are devoted or not. Your devotion has nothing to do with Her. Your devotion has something to do with you. If you are absolutely in devotion, nothing of you will be left. If nothing of you is left, She will be as strong and real as the morning sunlight. The only thing is, for you to feel it, you must be empty. How empty you are, that strongly you will feel it.

Your devotion is not about Devi; your devotion is about dissolving yourself. But without Her, you cannot be devout. You need something; you need somebody to be devout, so you can use Her. If you are in love with somebody or something, it is like this…If you see a cloud, Oh, it looks like Bhairavi! If you see a stone, It looks like Bhairavi! For devotees of Shiva, if you show them anything, they will say, Oh, it looks like a lingam! See that cloud? It looks like a lingam. Do you see? Do you see? It may sound stupid to you – it is stupid on one level, but it is a fantastic device. In everything, if you see that, now you don’t see yourself anywhere.

This is a fantastic device to lower the sense of who you are because your sense of the world is just yourself, please understand this. Your experience of the world is just yourself. Everything is just a reflection within you. Only because of you, the world exists as far as you are concerned. Only because of you, the whole creation exists. In this condition, there can be no devotion, there can be no perception. Everything that you see as the world is your interpretation, it is your reflection. That is not the world, that is not the creation, that is not the Creator. To demolish this, where ‘me’ has become so big…I see Bhairavi everywhere. Now, after some time, everything is like that. If you see a leaf, Oh, it looks like Bhairavi. If you see a flower, It looks like Bhairavi. You don’t say this to anybody, just do this within yourself. Who you are will just disappear over a period of time.

So, is this not stupid? An idea that works, do you call it stupid or smart? It works, that’s all. All devices are to be used, not to be analyzed. It is not for analysis, it is for use. If you use it, it works. If you analyze, what is there in it? If I analyze you, what the hell is there within you? There is really nothing. Isn’t it?

The Significance of Worshipping a Devi

The Significance of worshipping Devi, this article is about a seeker Buddhi Vallabh (Father of Swami Rama) doing intense Sadhana on Manasa Devi, seeking a Spiritual Guru. The following words are from the book "At the Eleventh Hour" by Pandit Rajmani Tigunait :-

Buddhi Vallabh was convinced that to transform himself from a professional pandit to a genuine sadhaka (seeker) he must move to a place where no one knew him. So one night he gathered his courage, withdrew his attachment to his family, and walked away.
He was already a great devotee of the Divine Mother Durga, so living near a shrine dedicated to that goddess was a natural choice. There were several such places in Garhwal, but all were too close to his village to give him the anonymity he sought. So he went to a shrine dedicated to Manasa Devi in the forest near Haridwar and built his dwellings in the hills nearby. He began his meditation with the intention of finding a master who could initiate him and put him on the path.
Manasa Devi is a compassionate goddess. According to popular belief, she fulfills the desire of those who pray to her for help and brings peace and happiness to the human mind (manas). Her shrine is a central pilgrimage site in Haridwar and can be reached by cable car, but seventy five years ago it was only a small temple on top of a steep hill surrounded by a thick forest. It could be reached only by foot. Elephants and Tigers roamed the area, and scarcity of even the barest necessities prevented all but the most courageous and austere sadhakas from doing their practices there.
Six months passed. Buddhi Vallabh continued to meditate on the Divine Mother at the shrine of Manasa Devi. He had undertaken a very special practice known as Shata Chandi, which required that he observe many austerities, such as eating only once a day, bathing in the Ganga, worshipping the Divine Mother at the temple and reciting the entire scripture, Durga Saptashati, every day. He spent his remaining time doing japa of the navarna mantra, and on the the day he finished the practice, the great Himalayan adept Bengali Baba visited Manasa Devi. Buddhi Vallabh was thrilled to see the sage and was certain that Bengali Baba was the master who would guide him on the path. Still holding his mala, he placed his head at the master’s feet, and Bengali Baba blessed him, saying, “Your practice at Manasa Devi’s shrine is complete.

A Glimpse of Linga Bhairavi Consecration

Linga Bhairavi - A Fierce Feminine Force

Questioner : Sadhguru, could you tell us something about Linga Bhairavi ?

Sadhguru : She is yet to be born. Giving birth to somebody or something which is far bigger than yourself is a tremendously beautiful experience. Because of a variety of disturbances from outside, her gestation period unfortunately has been stretched beyond what we thought it will take but hopefully we will deliver her sometime 2009.

Linga Bhairavi will be a very new form. A linga typically represents the masculine, but she is a Linga Bhairavi. Bhairav-I means it is feminine. She will be of different nature. She will respond to a particular kind of appeal. If someone knows how to do the necessary appeal, she will respond to them in a big way. So you will have a kind of super technology with which you can get anything you want done - that is the whole idea of Devi worship. There is a huge culture of Devi worship here in India. But not only in India - in Arabia, Europe, and large parts of Africa, everywhere goddess worship was the most prominent thing till the monotheistic religion came up. All the crusades and inquisitions were mainly against people who were goddess worshipper. They tried to completely banish the goddess from the planet, but in India she lived and she continues to live. Everywhere else, wherever the monostheistic religions dominated, they completely erased the worship of the feminine.

One crucial point they held against these Devi or goddess worship groups was, they said they were doing devil's work because they were doing things that other people could not grasp or understand. They could do things that others would not have means to do - that means they were into occult practices. Because they could perform occult practices, they were branded has devil worshippers and put to death, or their places of worship were burnt. Systematically, over centuries, goddess worship was completely erased.

Here in India, it is still a very strong culture, but today, even here it has become like this that people conduct Devi worship in a clandestine way. People have become educated - anything that does not appeal to their reason, they want to destroy. Because of this, most of the Devi temples conduct the core of their worship in a very clandestine way. , not known to the outside world. Not everybody, just a small group of people is involved in this, because unfortunately, society has become very male dominated.

When I say male dominated, I do not mean man is dominating. I mean the male mind is dominating. Woman also has become like a man today. That is the most unfortunate thing. Women think they are becoming free by becoming like men. This is the most horrible slavery, that a woman has to become like a man. Once the masculine mind dominates the world, anything that does not appeal to the reason will be destroyed; which is happening worldwide. Here in India also this is happening, but you cannot kill the Devi worship totally because it is too deep-rooted. There are still some hardcore people like me. People have still kept the feminine alive in them - there are many of them. But I think worship of the feminine being mainstream is over in the world. It will always be somewhere clandestine. That is one of the reasons Linga Bhairavi will take a corner. She is taking a corner, but she got a triangular temple because of that. The Linga Bhairavi temple is going to be in the southwestern corner of the Dhayanalinga complex. Linga Bhairavi will be a very fierce feminine force.

The Dhayanalinga is a very powerful energy form but he is made in such a way that he has no need to defend himself, so he does not defend himself. One form of Shiva is Bhole, that means he is simple minded; because he just gives to everybody irrespective of who they are; how they will use him, misuse him - he doesn't care. That's how he is. Because of this nature, people would want to use it. For anybody who is practicing the occult, the Dhyanalinga is like a goldmine because occult practitioners have a certain type of sadhana through which they know how to make use of energy but they do not know how to create it. This is why the occult has always involved sacrifice - they know how to use the energy but they do not know how to create it. So they destroy one life to use it the way they want it - that has always been their way. It would be boon for anybody who is into serious practice of occult to be in the presence of Dhayanalinga and do certain sadhana, and to use the energies for occult practices; but we would not like to encourage that.

In this generation, it will not happen, but in future it is possible that people who want to do occult practices and use these energies in so many different ways would want to take over the place; and they will be capable. They will be too diabolically calculative and they are very powerful manipulators; they could just take over the whole space to use for a completely different purpose. When you create such a big energy source, naturally they will be drawn towards it, and you cannot keep them out, because not all occult is necessarily negative. The occult can be a positive force. It all depends on who is using it and for what purpose.

So we want to create Linga Bhairavi as a space which will be open for the occult. We will open up that possibility. This may cause a certain amount of misunderstanding and disturbance in people around right now, but that does not matter. I have gotten used to live with misunderstanding, and misunderstanding will always be there. These are sciences; these are things that very few people in the world can do. So, we will establish this space when I am still around. These are things which will live for a very longtime, and these are things which people will cherish. This is not only for the occult. For people who are only seeking physical health and material wellbeing, Linga Bhairavi could be far more responsive. I only hope the Linga Bhairavi temple will not become more crowded than the Dhyanalinga. That should not happen.

Still, for majority of the people, their immediate wellbeing is the most important thing. If we make their immediate wellbeing effortless, if they can achieve their material needs so much more easily, I am hoping - you know I am a hopeless optimist - that if they have more time in their hands, they will dedicate it to their spiritual search and wellbeing. I fear Linga Bhairavi may become more popular with people than the Dhayanlinga, but she also has a spiritual dimension. She could be one more conduit. On the northern end of the outer parikrama, we created the Theerthakund as a conduit for people to experience the Dhyanalinga. Similarly, on the southwest end, the Linga Bhairavi also will become a conduit to enhance people's ability to experience the Dhayanalinga.

So in one way, Linga Bhairavi is like a side attraction for people. People may find her more impactful than the Dhyanalinga itself because she will be very raw energy. The Dhayanlinga is subtle - it takes some amount of focus to feel it. But she will be so raw, nobody can miss it; very strong, raw power. In a way, she will be a kind of insurance for the Dhayanlinga on a long-term basis. If people want to do certain work, they can use Linga Bhairavi.

Why are we facilitating such things ? - Because I am not against anything in life; I am okay with everything. It is just that we have to counterbalance everything with something else. If we try to eradicate it, it will only grow. Right now, because of ecological pollution and other things that are happening, tomorrow, shall we pass a law to stop all the industry, buses and automobiles ? You think it is going to work ? We are saying, "Let's plant more tress." Actually, planting more trees is not a 100% solution; we are just delaying the process. If you take medicine that your doctor gives, you are not becoming immortal, you are only delaying death. That is how the whole life works.

You cannot eliminate those things from the world. They have been there for a very longtime. So, we are setting up a small corner where people can make use of this energy. And also for the devotees and meditators who come there, their life is not all spiritual. There are other aspects to their life. They have a family, they still have to struggle for their money, they have to fight for their professional wellbeing - there are so many things. For people, who are seeking physical and material wellbeing, these aspects are also available in the Dhyanalinga, but the Linga Bhairavi will cater to them a little better.

We do not want the Dhyanalinga to be a space to be used for any kind of personal pursuits, whatever they are. The Dhayanlinga, should be constantly kept as a spiritual space, not to be used for anything else. But people have other aspirations. It is not in me to decide and judge what somebody should be doing - it is upto them what they do. It is just that if they show an inclination, we are willing to help. If they do not have an inclination, they just want to enjoy the physicality of the world. I have no issue with that. It is up to them. Till they realise the limitation of what it is, let them go....

So, if you want health, wellbeing, prosperity - these kinds of things are very strong in the Linga Bhairavi energy. People who imbibe it can benefit from it that way. And she has a spiritual possibility also. Especially for those who are emotionally bound, the devotee kind of people, Linga Bhairavi will become a stronger attachment. It will give them a stronger sense of emotional connection than the Dhyanalinga because the Dhyanalinga doesn't really respond to your emotions. He only respond to your energy. He is just on all the time. That is the most wonderful way to do things but people have their limitations and inclination. So Linga Bhairavi can become a powerful force.

She will be fierce and powerful. What level of consecration to go for depends on many factors, especially the kind of support that will be there. When we did the Dhyanalinga conscration, we were doing this with time, space and certain kind of compulsions. There was very minimal support and a huge amount of resistance and struggle in the social situation around us. Now we have a much larger support base, both socially and otherwise. There are lots of suitable people around. If the situation allows, we would include a large group of people and make it happen. Otherwise, it could be done in stages, involving a small group and then a little larger group for peripheral work.

There is no question of ritualistic consecration. It is bound to be energy work. It will again be mercury-based linga. But will it be like the Dhyanalinga ? No. The kind of consecration we will do for Linga Bhairavi will need maintenance to keep it vibrant. She will not be like Goddess Kali - she will not ask for blood on daily basis. She will be consecrated in a different way. Because there is rasa - mercury is refered to as rasa - she will not need any outside help, but still she will need some maintenance. The Dhyanalinga does not need any maintenace. If for thousand years nobody enters the temple, after thousand years, it will still be the same. It will not drop even a notch. But if we consecrate Linga Bhairavi, it will not be like that. It can sustain itself for a certain period but after that it will dissipate.

There are many levels of consecration that can be done. One thing is consecrating the idol and making it powerful; that we will anyway do. Another is creating a form like this and letting it loose, so that people can seek it wherever they are. There are many forms like this, which at different times in history, people created and let loose, and even today people are making use of them. In India, there are many many examples - people call for a certain goddess and she actually appears for them. Most of these goddess were created in terrible forms. She appears to them in that form and things happen.

One example that is fairly well-known is Ramakrishna Paramhansa. Ramakrishna used to call Kali and she would come. He would actually feed her and she would eat. The plate would become empty. It was the real form, because these forms were created long ago. These are not just dolls that are created for the psychological wellbeing of a person. These are energy forms, which have been created and let loose. If you know how to bring them down, you can bring them down right here, like a live thing.

If we want to go for that level of consecration, it will involve a lot more. A new goddess will become alive. Making her alive in one form, here in the idol is one level of consecration. Making her truly alive, not in just this form, so that simply she is there, is something else. We could also establish a method that can be imparted to people, through which they can bring down that particular form into their lives. That will take a lot more. That is the kind of work I must be doing. I am in my elements only in that kind of work. We will make up our mind how exactly to create her, whether to make her mild or to make her wild. What kind of goddess do you want, mild and nice, or wild and wonderful ?
