Difference between a seeker, disciple and a devotee - Robert Adams

There are three types of people that enter the spiritual path.

The first is called the seeker,
the second is called the disciple,
and the third is called the devotee.

The seekers are the worst ones because they never stop seeking. While they are at satsang they think about who they will see tomorrow. They never stop. They run from pillar to post; they go to India to seek a teacher, then to Hawaii or St. Louis when they hear about another teacher. They are seekers, and this is good to an extent, because they are better off than the people who do nothing and think they are human. Unfortunately you can be a seeker for a thousand lifetimes without ending it.
If you are a sincere seeker, with a heart that truly wishes to awaken, the time will come when you become a disciple.

The disciple finds a teacher and learns all they can from that teacher. Yet they still are not sure; they still have
doubts. They still are interested in me, me, me, me, asking, “What am I getting out of this?” Also they still go to other teachers from time to time, even while staying around one particular teacher. They may be a disciple but they are not that close.

If the disciple is sincere in their heart, with love and compassion, thinking kind feelings towards all, they will eventually become a devotee.
The devotee becomes the consciousness of the teacher. A devotee forgets all about him or herself. They could be in satsang where everyone is going wild, but the devotee sees nothing but the teacher. The devotee is oblivious to anything going on in satsang, but only has love and good feelings towards all. The devotee is interested in the teacher's welfare and ultimately becomes enlightened. It is the devotees that awaken before anyone else.

In which category are you? Ask yourself.

Once the Guru leaves...........................................

Questioner: Sadhguru, we are all on this bus journey with you as the driver. At some point, you may decide to hop off the bus. You have two types of passengers. Those who are focused on the destination – even if you put the bus on auto pilot, they should be okay. But you also have passengers who are focused on the driver – the destination doesn’t matter to them. What happens to them if you put it on auto pilot?

Sadhguru: People have gotten interested in the driver only because of the destination that he represents. If you have a dream about going to a certain destination, the man who drives the bus becomes a part of your dream. You may be thinking “Sadhguru” with tears in your eyes, but if I go to the next village, they are not even bothered who I am, because they are not interested in going anywhere. They have not even thought about it, so what I represent does not mean anything to them.

Your interest is the destination, but the destination is abstract, while the driver is something that you can relate to. Therefore, in your understanding, the driver has become important. But actually, the important thing for you is the destination. The way the mind understands, knows, and perceives things is like this: “If the driver is not there, will we really get to the destination?” You have no trust in the technology of auto-piloting. You think if it is put on auto pilot, it will not happen, which is not true.

The question is, “When are you going to go – before me or after me?” Maybe I will outlive you – I have not made up my mind when to go. Does this mean I have an unbounded amount of time? Right now, no. If one wishes, one can earn that. But it needs a lot of hard work, just to drag on for a few more years, and I am not the kind to do that. Suppose I leave tomorrow, is your spiritual journey going to end? Definitely not. Instead of piloting it from outside, it could be piloted from inside. The initiations that you have gone through, whether it is shoonya or anything else, are not empty procedures or a bundle of instructions – they are a huge investment of life energy. If you keep it as a seed in your belly, you do not feel its presence. You have to create the necessary atmosphere for it to become a big tree, then there is no way you cannot feel its presence.

The unfortunate reality for most masters in the past has been that the spiritual processes that they started gathered much more momentum after they left. The physical absence makes the other presence very powerful – it always greatly enhances the other dimension. If I went tomorrow, it would also be to your benefit, so there is no need to be concerned. But it will not happen tomorrow – sorry to disappoint you.

Devoting oneself towards one form of God. - Sadhu Om.

The mind which is nothing but the reflection of
the Self, is a very great wondrous power in its pure
state. It is so powerful that it can create and see
anything which it thinks of intensely, in gross form.

The mind which is nothing but the reflection of

The main point of Yoga is to collect the scattered
thoughts into one and fix the mind on that one
thought only. The worship of God is a means to focus
the mind on one point, setting aside the other
innumerable thoughts concerning one’s daily activities
rising (in one) during the waking state. In the Path of
Love (Bhakti Marga) when such confidence in God:
“God will look after everything in my life; why should
I think and worry about it” increases, thousands of
unnecessary thoughts will depart.

But this alone is not
sufficient. The important point in Bhakti Yoga is to fix
the mind on one name and form of God, and not
change the worship from one name and form of God
to another and thereby allowing the mind to branch
out into so many thoughts and waver.

The right sign that one has understood that
God is one only, is one’s clinging to one God only.
Spelling and singing so many different names of
God, only betrays the lack of faith and understanding
of the oneness of God!

Simply be, and await the descent of Grace upon yourself... and you can't go wrong! - Annamalai Swami.

Q: Yesterday, in my meditation, I found myself in the midst of the most glorious feeling! Waves of bliss washed over me and I expanded -- becoming truly one with the world.

A: Is that feeling there, right now?

Q: Um, no, not really! But the memory is still there... and I feel truly ennobled, merely thinking about it. What does this indicate?

A: That which comes and goes, however "ennobling", is still not the Truth. The glimpse of the Self, as the attribute-less Absolute, is very rare. Every experience is an interpretation of this Reality, exactly as the entire phenomenal world is... albeit arguably closer to Reality, in this case. Exactly as is the case with everything in the mind, this could indicate several things -- some apparently desirable and some, apparently undesirable. In some cases, it could lead to the entity (Jiva) searching for a repeat of the same experience for the rest of the phenomenal existence in that body. In certain others, it could herald the desire for freedom (mumukshutvam), leading to eventual freedom (moksham.)

Simply be, and await the descent of Grace upon yourself... and you can't go wrong!

Those who meditate on Self, with utmost faith and trust, the help from God will come automatically.

BHAGAVAN RAMANA TELLS THE STORY OF THE SPARROW

When a sparrow was flying, holding its egg in its beak, the egg slipped and fell into the ocean. The sparrow, anxious to retrieve it, repeatedly dipped itself in the ocean, sucked some water through its beak, came to the shore, released the water and fanned its wings. The sage Narada who was passing that way saw this action of the sparrow, enquired, and came to know the reason.

‘You stupid sparrow! Is this something you can accomplish?’ said Narada.
The sparrow replied, ‘I don’t care whether it is possible or not. If I persevere tenaciously, beyond that it is in God’s hands.’

Narada, delighted with its faith, went to Garuda and told him everything.

Then he said, ‘A creature belonging to your bird tribe is exerting itself with so much faith. Is it proper for you to keep quiet? Can you not help?’
After hearing this story Garuda flew quickly to the sparrow. As soon as he flapped his wings there, all the waters of the ocean separated into two, leaving the egg of the sparrow visible. The sparrow immediately picked it up in its beak and flew away.

Similarly, those who meditate on the Self and do good deeds, if they labour hard without feeling ‘This is a mammoth task! There is no one to help! Is this possible for me?’ then the help of God will come automatically.

Will the waters of the ocean get diminished by the sparrow sucking water through its beak and by its releasing it on the shore? The sparrow performed its task with faith [sraddha] and perseverance. Similarly, if anyone makes an effort, it will not fail to bear fruit at some time or other. For all things faith alone is important. For those who engage in good deeds, if they work with faith, the help of God will come, just as it did through Garuda.
Until it comes one should stay with one's sadhana without any faltering of faith, and with utmost exertion and steadfastness.

A mind shattering but soul evolving incident from Babaji's life

"On another occasion Babaji's sacred circle was disturbed by the arrival of a stranger. He had climbed with astonishing skill to the nearly inaccessible ledge near the camp of the master.

"'Sir, you must be the great Babaji.' The man's face was lit with inexpressible reverence. 'For months I have pursued a ceaseless search for you among these forbidding crags. I implore you to accept me as a disciple.'

"When the great guru made no response, the man pointed to the rock-lined chasm below the ledge.

"'If you refuse me, I will jump from this mountain. Life has no further value if I cannot win your guidance to the Divine.'

"'Jump then,' Babaji said unemotionally. 'I cannot accept you in your present state of development.'

"The man immediately hurled himself over the cliff. Babaji instructed the shocked disciples to fetch the stranger's body. When they returned with the mangled form, the master placed his divine hand on the dead man. Lo! he opened his eyes and prostrated himself humbly before the omnipotent one.

"'You are now ready for discipleship.' Babaji beamed lovingly on his resurrected chela. 'You have courageously passed a difficult test.* Death shall not touch you again; now you are one of our immortal flock.' Then he spoke his usual words of departure, 'Dera danda uthao'; the whole group vanished from the mountain."

*The test concerned obedience. When the illumined master said: “Jump,” the man obeyed. Had he hesitated he would have disproved his assertion that he considered his life worthless without Babaji’s guidance. Therefore, though drastic and unusual, the test was a perfect on in the circumstances.

Swami Rama on this auspicious occasion of Guru Purnima

Swami Rama :
In all spiritual traditions this day is considered to be very holy. For on this day students become aware that life is not to believed only in the external world—that there is something higher, deeper, than what they have been doing. They become aware of their internal states. But to find this something you need a guide. Then it becomes easy. Your guide shares his experiences, which have been imparted by his guide. There is a long chain of sages and traditions, and they impart knowledge to their students lovingly and selflessly.

For me, today is a great day. When this day comes I remember the way I was looked after by my master. He was so loving. When I see darkness everywhere, in all relationships in the world, form one corner gleams light. I call it the light of the guru. If you find a real guru, he can give you his help. He can sacrifice his whole life for you if that time comes. He will pray for you. He never wants his students to suffer.

But remember that suffering comes from within, and if you cry for help, you are helped. Many times help comes from the invisible world, and you don’t see it. Yet you get help when no one can help you and you say, “God help me!” If you have a guru or teacher, and he is very sincere, and if he is in touch with the tradition, then anyone from that tradition can appear and help, provided you are on the path. It is said, “When you are ready, the guru appears”; it is never said, “If you are not ready, the guru appears.” When you have a burning desire to attain enlightenment, definitely you get guidance.
You are never lonely on the path of spirituality. That which makes you lonely is the world and its external relationships. On the path of spirituality you are all alone, which means all-in-one, but you are not lonely. And as you attain the heights a time comes when you are totally alone—because all peaks are lonely. But that is not the sort of loneliness you find in the world. This loneliness is fulfilling. You don’t feel alone. You feel one with the Absolute Reality.
You can do this. Not by worrying, not by taxing your mind, not by physical exercises, but just by purifying your heart and mind. The easiest and surest way is that of self-surrender. You don’t surrender yourself to any external force. No. You surrender your ego to the Atman within you. And then a fount of knowledge flows. Then you come in touch with that happiness which is self-existent and unending, from eternity to eternity.
So this day reminds students that mere living in the external world is not fulfilling. The purpose of living should also be attained. You have to do certain duties—that’s a must. But all duties should lead you to the awareness, “God exists in me. I am a shrine of the Lord. Why am I afraid? From where does this fear come?” If you remember that you are a shrine of the Lord, you will never be afraid. When you get fears, it means you have forgotten. God provides, providing you have that confidence.
You develop that confidence slowly. But remember—God is merciful, but at the same time he is a cruel fire. You have to understand both aspects. You have to accept life as it is, and enjoy. Don’t postpone enjoyments for tomorrow. Enjoy today—right now! Smile. Smile and understand. “The Lord is within me. Why am I worrying?” This way, make your life easy.
This day reminds us that we have come to this earth to become complete, to attain perfection. And you can do it. Use all your might, all human effort. This is called the ascending force. Then you come in touch with the descending force, which is the grace of God. The moment you have done your work, you’ll find grace. So do your job skillfully. Surrender all the fruits to Him. Before going to bed, say, “O Lord, anything good I have done, I surrender to you. Help me, guide me.” This way awareness develops. You become constantly aware of the Reality within you.
So today is a day when I, when everyone, remembers his teacher, his teachings, and becomes aware of the Reality within. This day makes you aware that you have to tread the path faithfully, loyally, and honestly so that you complete your journey happily. It is called Guru Purnima day.

Sadhguru on devotees who are torn been their work and their longing to Be with their Guru.

Sadhguru : Somebody - I forgot his name - who was very dear to Ramakrishna Paramahansa, went to him and said, 'Oh, Bhagawan, I just want to be with you all the time. But I have a wife; I have children; I have to earn money; I have to go to my office. I really don't know what to do. My heart is here, but I am putting my body elsewhere. My suffering is unbearable. What I should do?' Ramakrishna had his own way of expressing himself. He said, "Just the utterance of the name "Kali", if it bring tears to your eyes, you forget about your earnings, your job, your other responsibilities. You just forget about all of it. Do not worry. She will take care of it.'

Similarly, if just the mention of your Guru's name brings tears to your eyes, I would say the same. But I don't say those things to you because I am very embarrassed about who I am. If I go into detail, it would bee too fairytale-ish and incredible for you.

Every moment, whatever you step on, in many ways, you are only stepping on Me. It is just that when a little awareness of that enters you, you should burst. You should become ripe, and be ready to sprout. A seed is a certain comfort because it has integrity; it has a shell; it has protection. But if a seed is not broken, a new sprout will never happen. If you try to save the shield that protects the seed, no new life will ever happen; no new possibility will ever come. You just put the seed in the earth and you forget about it. After a few days you just see a plant and you are happy. But the seed goes through a tremendous struggle of losing itself - losing its safety and integrity and becoming vulnerable to every outside force that's around. But without that vulnerability, without the breaking, without the shedding of the shell, life won't sprout.

The Power of Guru works, If a Disciple gives himself earnestly.

~~SWAMI PRANABANANDA~~
Exalted Disciple of Lahiri Mahasaya

Lahiri Mahasaya was the greatest yogi I ever knew. He was Divinity Itself in the form of flesh."

If a disciple, I reflected, could materialize an extra fleshly form at will, what miracles indeed could be barred to his master?

"I WILL TELL YOU HOW PRICELESS IS A GURU'S HELP. I used to meditate with another disciple for eight hours every night. We had to work at the railroad office during the day. Finding difficulty in carrying on my clerical duties, I desired to devote my whole time to God. For eight years I persevered, meditating half the night. I had wonderful results; tremendous spiritual perceptions illumined my mind. But a little veil always remained between me and the Infinite. Even with super-human earnestness, I found the final irrevocable union to be denied me. One evening I paid a visit to Lahiri Mahasaya and pleaded for his divine intercession. My importunities continued during the entire night.

"'ANGELIC GURU, MY SPIRITUAL ANGUISH IS SUCH THAT I CAN NO LONGER BEAR MY LIFE WITHOUT MEETING THE GREAT BELOVED FACE TO FACE!'

"'What can I do? You must meditate more profoundly.'

"'I am appealing to Thee, O God my Master! I see Thee materialized before me in a physical body; bless me that I may perceive Thee in Thine infinite form!'

"Lahiri Mahasaya extended his hand in a benign gesture. 'You may go now and meditate. I HAVE INTERCEDED FOR YOU WITH BRAHMA.'

"Immeasurably uplifted, I returned to my home. In meditation that night, the burning Goal of my life was achieved. Now I ceaselessly enjoy the spiritual pension. Never from that day has the Blissful Creator remained hidden from my eyes behind any screen of delusion."

Swami Kriyananda talks on the dangers of disciples, who takes the Guru for granted because of physical closeness and talks of significance of Attunement to the Guru

Paramhansa Yogananda & his disciple Kriyananda
Swami Kriyananda relates his own experience of being with his Guru Paramhansa Yogananda :-

In fact, I found that in his (Paramhansa Yogananda) later years he spoke of truth in all its vastness and subtelety, and much more impersonally than had been in his earlier years.  Those disciples who had come to him many years before were not prepared for this new, and more impersonally wise, divine master.

The fact is, his early years were spent in trying to reach a large audience, and to uplift them with general spiritual teachings.  In his last years, he turned from mass upliftment to training individual disciples in the higher teachings of the spiritual path.  In his earlier years, he had presented himself in such a way as to give people the impression that what he had accomplished, they could accomplish easily.  He belittled himself, in order to make it easier for others to identify with him.  During his last years, however, he challenged his disciples to meet him on his own actual, exalted level in infinity.

Disciples who had been with him for many years tended to treat "youngsters" like me with a certain condescension, saying, "You weren't close to him, for many years, as we were."  What they didn't realize was the physical closeness to the Guru could also draw a bandage over the eyes, blinding the person to his inner greatness.  Therefore the great master Sri Ramakrishna said, "One who is enlightened is like an oil lamp which casts its rays at a distance, but creates a shadow directly underneath it."

Since the true Guru is not that which appears outwardly, but his inner overreaching spirit, it can easily, and often does, happen that those who come to him early in his life actually develop less of an awareness of who he truly is than those who come nearer the end.  Ramakrishna's closest disciples were those who came towards the end of his life.

A master often has his own mission to fulfill before he can assume the role of training disciples.  Therefore, again (as i said), those who came to him early may see him more naturally in terms of that outer role.  In our Guru's case, he did train certain disciples from the beginning, but he showed himself to them much more from a level of human personality.

One difference I noted in him between when he was with us and when he was with the public was that, when he was with his disciples, he spoke more about Attunement with the Guru than even about personal spiritual practices like Kriya Yoga.  In the first chapter of the Gospel of St.John it is stated, "As many has received him, to them he gave power to become the sons of God."  By "received him" much more was meant than mere belief in Jesus Christ.  "Received Him" meant deep inner attunement with t he Saviour's conciousness.

It is not possible for the ego to rise out of ego-conciousness by self-effort alone.  Every struggle to do so only twists around to affirm that lesser conciousness yet again.  Only by Attunement with a True Guru, who has himself transcended ego altogether, can one understand what it means to see things no longer with a personal bias.  Without a Guru, it is impossible for techniques by themselves to raise one out of this final, and most fundamental, delusion; that we are each a separate reality, distinct and separate from all others.

Indeed, yoga techniques alone cannot ensure that anyone finds God.  As the Master said of Jean Haupt, a male disciple who had practiced endless kriyas, but than had left the path, "He was like a merchant: I've done so many kriyas. Now, Lord, you must give me so much realization."  The spiritual path is not like that.  One cannot buy God!".

I understand now, that every kriya should be an act of devotional self-offering.  For everything comes, in the end, by God's grace.  Grace is like sunlight on side of the building.  If the curtain of one room is kept closed, grace will not be able to enter there.  Human effort is necessary, but that effort must be in cooperation with God's will.  Such effort is indeed necessary, as a means of removing any and every ego-created obstacle to the sunlight of God's grace.  Beyond that point, however, self-effort will only strengten the ego.  This is where yoga comes in, but it must be performed with the attitude of aligning ones' egoic will with that God's will; it must not strenglten the ego.  Grace flows most powerfully in the inner presence of, and even more importantly through inner Attunement with, one's Guru.  As the sciptures of India state, "One moment in the company of a (true) Saint will be your raft over the ocean of delusion."

The master told us the story of Draupadi, wife of Arjuna.  Krishna once said to her, "Why don't you practice the yoga techniques?"
"I would like to, Master," she replied, "but how can i, when i am unable to take my mind away from you long enough to practice them?"
"Krishna then," Yogananda told us, "only smiled".

SURRENDERING TO MASTER IS SURRENDERING TO VISIBLE GOD....

The disciple is ready. In fact to say that he is ready to die is something less than the truth. The disciple has already died into the master; it is not going to happen in the future, it has already happened. It has happened the day the disciple accepted the master as his master: since then he has been no more, only the master lives in him.

Slowly slowly, the presence of the master overfloods the disciple. And the presence of the master is not really the presence of the master himself: the master is overflooded with God. The master is only a vehicle, a passage, a messenger; it is God flowing through the master. When the disciple surrenders to the master totally he is really surrendering to God in the guise of the master. God he cannot see yet, but the master he can see, and in the master he can see something godly. The master becomes the first proof of God to him. Surrendering to the master is surrendering to the visible God.

And, slowly slowly, as the surrender deepens, the visible disappears into the invisible. The master disappears. When the disciple reaches into the innermost heart of the
master, he does not find the master there but God himself, life itself -- indefinable, inexpressible.

A Guru’s Predicament - Sadhguru on His Full Potential

Q: Sadhguru, you once said that you are functioning at about 3% of your full potential. Can you tell us how we can create a situation where you could unleash your full potential? And what would that 100% mean?

Sadhguru: What would the full potential be? Different people have expressed this in different ways. Krishna said, “I am the radiant sun among the luminaries. I am the moon among the stars. I am the lion among the beasts. I am the king of birds among the birds. I am the Ganga among the rivers. I am the Himalaya among the mountains.” In this language he went on, very eloquently. Jesus said, “I am the son of God; the only son.” That is another kind of language; the same thing expressed in a different way. Gautama said, “If you walk my path you will never have to turn around,” – a subtler way of saying it. In India, it is very common to chant, “Aham Brahmasmi” – that means, “I am the Ultimate Truth.” Mansur al-Hallaj, who is the originator of the Sufi system, went to India, came back and said, “Anal haq.” That means, “I am the truth,” and he got into a lot of trouble.

I am not given to that kind of language; I am just putting it very simply. Whatever mechanics of this existence, whatever dimensions of this existence, if you just provide me the needed atmosphere, I can take you to any one of them and I can fix any one of them. I am not a god, I am not a Guru – I am a mechanic. This is the 21st century where God is a bad word, and Son of God is even worse. [Laughs] Two thousand years ago, God was a sacred word; so if somebody said, “I am the Son of God,” it was all right. So if you prepare the necessary situation, I can take you to the mechanics of this existence, whatever dimension it is; whatever needs to be done, I can fix it. That is the 100% potential; that does not sound as grand and poetic as, “I am the lion among the beasts. I am the Himalayas among the mountains. I am the Ganga among the rivers.” My interest in the existence is that it works. It looks so chaotic, so unwieldy, nobody knows the beginning and the end, but it still works.

So if you are interested in that which works, you are naturally a mechanic. I can make it work on any level of existence. It is just a question of creating a conducive atmosphere, and that is challenging. If we create the atmosphere, I can make it work on any level of existence. This is all I have aspired for – and this is all there is. So what do you have to do? One thing is the foundation – the foundation of any building should be in the ground, but the Isha Foundation is sitting on my head all the time. I want to put it to the ground. [Laughs] So if you are willing to be that ground and to take the load of the foundation, if it is off my head, a lot more things could be done. That is not all, but it is an important factor right now – I am trying to unload; step-by-step, I am getting it off my head, but still it is happening too slowly because life does not stop for one moment. [Laughs]
This is a race to the grave. You may think that the physical body is going to many places. “I went to Himalayas, I went to Florida, I vacationed in this place, I did this, I did that.” But still, your body is going straight to the grave – nowhere else. The rest is your imagination. Your physical body is going straight to the grave; no deviation. That is something that I am constantly aware of. In a very codified way, not the knowledge, but the keys to everything that is worth knowing are all in one place. If tomorrow somebody with the necessary awareness comes, it will not be lost. That was the intention of the Dhyanalinga – not just what I know, also what my Guru knew and what the whole tradition knew, everything is there, not in the form of knowledge, but in the form of keys. If someone is aware enough, they can pick it up and open whatever they want in the existence. It is a dvara, a doorway to the creation. You can use it to open just about anything. But right now, the 21st century is a talking century. If you don’t talk, nobody gets the point.

People don’t understand that if I don’t talk and just sit, something more profound is happening. If I don’t talk, they will gape, get up, and leave. People are even talking to themselves while driving a car or walking on the street, because there are hands-free sets. Just twenty years ago, if you had done this on the street, people definitely would have thought you have escaped from some kind of institution – but now it has become common. You don’t get along with anybody in this century but you talk to everybody. You go on the internet and talk to all kinds of people that you have not seen. People have love affairs with those that they have not seen because it is so easy to love people that you have not seen; it is just like loving God. [Laughter] The trouble is always with people that you have seen and have known for long periods of time, or that you have to live or work with. On some faceless Facebook, you are all lovey-dovey with the whole world. That is very easy, you know.

So because this is a talking century – I hope it won’t be a talking millennium – we have to talk, but at the same time create an atmosphere where the needed talk happens as quickly as possible so that we don’t have to go on talking endlessly. If the talk has to be quick, it has to be brutal. If the talk has to be brutal and still people should not run away, you have to create the necessary atmosphere where people are so overwhelmed by your love, devotion and intensity that when they come here, I can go straight at them – no diplomacy – so that the talking period can be shortened; otherwise, you will end up talking for the rest of your life and still people won’t get it. If you speak gently, the conversation will go on forever. One brutal word, it stops. To say a brutal word and not make them run away, to make them realize this brutality has a profoundness behind it, you need to create a certain atmosphere, otherwise the diplomacy that you should do, I will have to do, and my time is ticking away.

If people are created who are of a certain capability, people who are stable beyond mental moods and emotions, they will be the foundation – that means it is off my head. Then a lot more can be done. If we could find 100% expression with even a handful of people, that would already be fantastic. We are not expecting to find 100% expression with the whole word; that is never going to happen. I am not so dreamy. But definitely, it is possible to create a handful of people with whom it could be 100%. If that cannot be done, we may be a success in the world, people may be clapping their hands, but if we cannot find full expression even with a handful of people, if we have to be careful with them, watching out for their egos, then as a spiritual movement, it is a disaster.

We need people who have the necessary integrity, balance, stability, and heart in them, that even if you let them out into the most corrupt situation, they will function successfully there and come out untouched. Like Gautama allowed a young monk to stay at a prostitute’s house [knowing he can trust his integrity]; I want people like that, that I could send you into a place like that and still I would not have to worry about what you will be doing. We need people of integrity. Integrity has become a dicey thing in today’s world because people have very infantile ideas of freedom.

It would be impractical to think that you are going to make every fool on the planet into an enlightened being. The world is always a play between the positives and the negatives. Some generations enjoy the positives more than the negatives; some generations suffer the negatives more than they enjoy the positives. If there is something that we as a generation can do and be proud of, we have to see that for the next generation, the positives of life hugely outweigh the negatives. This does not mean there will be not a single problem in the world, that everything will be perfect; that would not be a dream, that would be hallucination.

When you dream something, it is also a possibility. When we talk about creating something, and you cannot see the logical staircase to reach there, or you see the staircase disappearing into the clouds, you think it is an impossible thing, but it is not. It just needs a little more fire. Suppose you were born in a social or family situation where education was not possible for you, and somebody told you, “Why don’t you become a doctor or an engineer,” you would have said, “Not for me, not possible, I will go to work.” But if somebody gave you a scholarship, if somebody supported you, you could have gotten there.

So that which is not in your realm of experience and thought seems to be impossible to you. But should not whoever has the largest experience, whoever has explored the world to the maximum extent, guide where the world should go? That is how it should be, but that does not happen right now. The whole world may not go spiritual but if you at least create a possibility that is available and accessible to the whole world, then the pluses would increase to a point where people can gloss over the minuses. When life is so good, even if one little bad thing happens, you can ignore it and go on. Otherwise, every little minus pricks you so badly because there are no pluses in your life.

Particularly in today’s world, because of technology, our ability to reach people is phenomenal; never before was this possible. What we can do in terms of reach, a Krishna could not do, a Buddha could not do, a Jesus could not do. Today, we have the advantage of technology – we have audio, video, television, and the internet – we can slip into everybody’s house. Though there are many other disadvantages in today’s world, this is a phenomenal advantage. If we make use of this – if we can change the culture of this planet from materialistic to spiritual even by one percent in our lifetime, it is a phenomenal achievement because if a ship keeps changing direction by one percent, after some time, it will have made a complete U-turn. Yes, you cannot turn everyone around right now, and there is no need to. If you can just change the direction by one degree, in a certain period of time, the world will have made a U-turn. This can be done if the necessary people are there.
We still have some life in us – there is time left. You decide how far you want to take it, what you want to do. Let me see that fire spilling from your eyes – not a fire of anger, greed, or passion, but the cool fire which burns quietly and does all the work that needs to be done without burning itself up. Cool fire fuels everything but it does not burn anything up – and we have everything in our hands to do that. Today, we have a social situation in the world where as long as we don’t break the law, we can do whatever we want. This was never so before.

It does not take millions of people to do this. Fifty really committed, stable people who don’t have basic questions on an everyday basis, are all it takes. You must settle your basic questions and from then on your questions should dig deeper. People come up with the same nonsense every day. If you are asking the same stupid question for ten years, then this speaks of your intelligence, or rather the lack of it. “Is he going to exploit us? Is he going to use us?” If I wanted to exploit you, I could have made it in such a way that when you walked into that free introductory and I would have told you, “Drop everything that you have here and walk away,” you would have done it. At least trust my efficiency. If you take that idea from your mind, you are on stable ground. If you cannot settle these basic questions, you must leave or just be on the fringe; just come and go, fine.

So, if you settle these basic things within yourself once and for all, this will bring stability, a new ground for you to stand upon within yourself. Then the next steps will naturally come. Every rung will be a challenge, so you have to stabilize the ground on which the ladder is standing. I am not asking you to run up the ladder without checking every rung. But if you keep disturbing the ground on which the ladder stands, then however good the quality of the ladder is, it is useless. You take your time on every rung; that is perfectly okay. If you are maddened by this, you run up the ladder without bothering whether it is going to withstand your weight or not – that is also okay. If that is not possible for you, check every rung and go. But this one basic thing, the ground, you must settle. If you don’t settle that, it will be just waste of time.

Time is not a commodity that comes and goes – it just goes. Time is life. We cannot afford to squander it. I would even say, there is no such thing as time, there is just life. If we create such people with the necessary integrity, stability, and balance, we can start exploring.

The Greatest One of All - Sadhguru’s Encounter with His Guru

There have been many absolutely fabulous Gurus. Each one of them functioned in different ways. Their ways were so different that every time a Guru came, people compared him to the one that had been there before and altthey said, “No, this is not how a Guru should be. He must be like that…” They had said the same thing about the Guru who had come before, because the previous one had not been like that one either. So what is the nature of a Guru? If he has his own nature, he is not a Guru. He has no nature of his own. He carefully constructs his personality, attitude and everything as he feels it will be most effective, and also depending on how he evolved. It has nothing to do with him being a person. The other day, somebody asked me, “What kind of a person are you really?” Really, I am not a person, because in different situations, I am a different kind of person. “So are you acting all the time?” No. I really make myself like that. You too make yourself in a certain way, but you are doing it compulsively. I do it consciously, that is all the difference – and that is a world of difference. When two people are together, what you experience as suppression or imposition by others is always their compulsion. What you call as personality is a certain limitation that you establish. You have to establish some framework, otherwise you cannot function.

This needs to be understood – a Guru is not a person, it is a certain possibility. Let me talk about the greatest of all of them – that is my Guru. [Applause] “Now, what is this nonsense, you think your Guru is the greatest?” – Yes. Only because in my experience, I saw him as the greatest, I aspired for him. If I thought there was somebody better than him, I would have gone to that one.

alt

My physical proximity with my Guru was just for a few minutes. He is that kind of a ruthless man that he waited for me to go through a lifetime of heartbreaking sadhana. I explored various possibilities and dimensions, went to any number of places, did absolutely intense sadhana, experienced various states of samadhis, acquired various capabilities, the kind of capabilities with which people today would easily set up a shop and make a big thing out of it. Almost two lifetimes I had spent in such intense spiritual pursuit and was almost there, but not quite there. So I explored various occult sciences, just to track down somebody who could push me across the final step. The journey took various directions; I sourced all kinds of people. When a sadhaka becomes so burningly intense, finding an appropriate Guru becomes a big problem. If you are lukewarm, you can find many. When you raise your pitch beyond a certain point, finding an appropriate one becomes rare.

So in this state, because of a certain understanding of and mastery over the system, knowing the process of creation within me on many levels, I decided to leave my body and do the search without the body. There are any number of beings like that who, because they could not find the necessary push when they were in the body, have left and searched because being without a body gives you a little more freedom to look around. So it was at such a point that my Guru entered my life and obviously, he came with his own game plan, and I got all that from him. He did not even care to touch me with his foot – I always thought, “Why didn’t he at least use his foot?” He used his stick. [Laughs] And in those few minutes – maybe in my experience it was a few minutes, but maybe it was a long time – everything that can happen to a human being happened to me.

alt

The culture and the nature of my sadhana had exposed me to a certain dimension, a certain form which has been a gateway for millions of spiritual seekers – that which is referred to as Shiva. Though the Ultimate had happened, there was still a trace of – I don’t know what to call it – maybe discontent that this did not come in the form of Shiva. So on seeing that he [Sadhguru’s Guru] took on this form and stood there in the traditional form of what we have known as Shiva, everything settled. And it was in these few moments that this fabulous, crafty man enslaved me for his project. [Laughs] And, if not for that project which he wanted to be fulfilled through me, my physical presence here would be out of question. Especially in that particular life I wondered, why didn’t he do it himself? His capability, the legend around him, was so big. He could have manifested it in so many ways. Why didn’t he do it himself? Maybe, when he could find a dumbo like me to do it, why should he do it himself? [Laughs]

I am sure his ability to do it was absolute. It took me two more lifetimes. In my enthusiasm to make it happen, in my longing to fulfill his vision and dream, I unnecessarily worked too hard in those two lifetimes. I could have just relaxed and waited for this moment and made it happen, but I could not rest for a moment, because I wanted to make it happen as soon as possible. When the [Dhyanalinga] consecration process was coming close, in many ways I clearly saw that my whole effort of two lifetimes had been wasteful, simply because he had set the time as to when the Dhyanalinga should happen. Now I clearly see that it was just timed right.

Guru Pooja

......................................................................................
The Guru is looked upon as an embodiment of God himself. For, it is through his grace and guidance that one reaches the highest state of wisdom and bliss. "My salutations to the Guru who is Brahma, Vishnu and Maheswara. The Guru is Parabrahma incarnate" Gururbrahmaa gururvishnuh gururdevo Maheswarah | Guruh-saakshaat parabrahma tasmai shrigurave namah ||

When we infuse spirit to a ritual, it becomes spirit-uality. Without the spirit, even spirituality becomes just a ritual! What this means to say is that every act of ours can become spirituality when we infuse the intensity and enthusiasm. It could be a small thing like having a cup of tea, if the spirit is there then it becomes a blissful act. Otherwise it becomes another ritual, another chore. Our life becomes monotonous and mechanical.

So, coming back to Guru Puja. What does this ritual do? It's to offer our gratitude to existence for all that we have. We are taught only societal "thank you"s, but when true gratitude oozes out from inside, its a natural expression of the being. This ritual creates the ambience and triggers that expression from within - ONLY if we are open to allow this to happen. Let me explain to you briefly the meaning of the chants that accompany the Guru Puja. It basically says that we offer our entire mind-body system, part-by-part to existence in gratitude. Since Guru symbolises existences, we invite Him to our core, just like we would invite a guest and offer ourselves to Him. We make the Guru comfortable in the home of our inner space by offering Him water to drink, rinse His mouth, fresh clothes to wear, sandal perfume to adorn Him, food to eat etc. Inviting the Guru to our inner space is equivalent to invoking the divinity/existential energy/God/cosmic energy that is within us.

Now, you may ask, 'if I have the feeling of gratitude, it's enough; why should I perform the ritual?'. Very valid question. But the problem is that our mind and inner space is so polluted that it easily wanders away here and there not allowing us to even feel the emotion of gratitude intensely. By doing the external ritual, it integrates our actions with our thoughts and emotions. It only adds intensity. This is the reason, we physically offer flowers, fruits, incense etc. How beautiful! When we are connected to the external Guru, then the Guru Puja can becomes even more beautiful! We can literally experience the Master sitting in front of us accepting the puja. Guru Puja can become an intimate rendesvouz with the Master!

We unite our minds with the holy mind of the Spiritual Master, who is considered the root and life-force of the spiritual path, to receive blessings to generate realisations on the path to enlightenment. The word puja literally means "to please", thus Guru Puja means "to please the Gurus, or Spiritual Teachers". Why should we please them? Because they are fully dedicated to helping us develop our inner potential to be enlightened. In fact, we cannot become enlightened without their skilled guidance, and thus they are more important to us than anyone else. The idea of "pleasing" our Spiritual Teachers is for our own benefit, not for theirs. We need merit, or positive energy for our enlightened potential to grow and become perfect, and one of the best ways to do that is to make beautiful offering and prayers to our Spiritual Teachers. This is what happens in the Guru Puja.

Faith in the guru

The following are the quotes from a tibetan book "Glimpse after Glimpse" authored by Sogyal Rinpoche on the above subject "Faith in the Guru". The book contains golden quotes by various tibetan masters.

"If, at the moment of death, you can unite your mind confidently with the wisdom mind of the master and die in that peace, then all, I promise and assure you, will be well.

Our task in life is to practice this merging with the wisdom mind of the master again and again, so that it becomes so natural that every activity- sitting, walking, eating, sleeping, dreaming and waking - starts to be increasingly permeated by the master's living presence. Slowly, over years of focused devotion, you begin to know and realize all apperances to be the display of the wisdom of the master. All the situations of life, even those that once seemed tragic, meaningless or terrifying, reveal themselves more and more transparently to be the direct teaching and blessing of the master, and the inner teacher."

********************************************************************************

When we have prayed and aspired and hungered for the truth for a long time, for many, many lives, and when our karma has become sufficiently purified, a kind of miracle takes place. And this miracle, if we can understand and use it, can lead to the ending of ignorance forever. The inner teacher, who has been with us always, manifests in the form of the "outer teacher", who, almost as if by magic, we actually encounter. This is the most important encounter of any lifetime.

************************************************************

Devotion is the purest, quickest, and simplest way to realize the nature of mind and all things. As we progress in it, the process reveals itself as wonderfully interdependent: We, from our side, try continually to generate devotion, which itself generates glimpses of the nature of mind, and these glimpses only enhance and deepen our devotion to the master who is inspiring us. So in the end devotion springs out of wisdom: devotion and the living experience of the nature of mind become inseperable and inspire each other.
