Devotion (+) creativity (-) limitations = Happenings at Isha Ashram.

Did You Know… that a Blue Whale’s tongue weighs almost 3,ooo kilograms – as much as a full-grown elephant? Or that the largest known star is 4 million times larger than our Sun? Or that the human brain generates enough power when you are awake to light up a small light bulb? Well, we needn’t stretch ourselves from blue whale tongues to mankind’s brains to find something that will leave us awestruck. Over the next few weeks we will be posting some amazing facts that have been hiding under our very noses right here at Isha. Here’s the first post in this series…( This page comes from Official Isha Yoga Blog)

The Aadhi Yogi Aalayam and the new Theerthakund are coming up at the Isha Yoga Center and construction is going ahead at great pace. Granite is being used extensively as a construction material to ensure the longevity of the structure so that future generations can benefit for thousands of years to come. Can you guess how heavy the largest block of stone used in the construction of these two massive buildings is?

50 tonnes!
Each of the stones that will form the wall of the new Theerthakund will weigh in at 50 tonnes, while some of the stones used for the base of Aadhi Yogi Aalayam will weigh in at 34 tonnes.
Massive blocks of granite, lie piled up against the backdrop of the Velliangiri Mountains at the Isha Yoga Center, waiting to be used in the construction.

If you think that’s amazing, take a guess at the weight of the heaviest stone ever used in a construction…
An estimated 800 tonnes! Three stones of limestone, each of which weigh 800 tonnes, were used in the construction of the Temple of Baalbek in Lebanon a few thousand years ago.
Seemingly miniscule men and animals are dwarfed by the gargantuan block of stone at the temple site in Baalbek, Lebanon

Sadhguru has spoken about this fabulous temple. Here’s an excerpt of the talk:
“Baalbek is an incredible monument. It is something that everybody should see. Some of the stones weigh 800 tonnes. I want you to just understand – to do this without equipment, without cranes, without trucks, without any big ships, what kind of human beings would even endeavour to think like that? Definitely not people who are thinking of just money and bread.
One interesting thing in this place is, if you look up at the ceiling, you will see stone lotuses hanging from the top of the temple. There is no lotus in the Middle East of course. It is the symbolism for Indian spirituality. And above all, in the museum at Baalbek, there is a stone with 16 corners called a Guru Pooja stone.
"This particular Guru Pooja is known as Shodashopachara which means 16 ways of treating a Guru. These 16 ways have something to do with the 112 chakras in the body. Guru Pooja is a way of making your whole system an invitation to the Divine."

Guru Pooja is not just an emotional thing, it is a whole system of creating a certain possibility. This is called Shodashopachara, which means 16 ways of treating a Guru. For this, 16-cornered stones are made which are called Guru Pooja Peetas which are unique to yogic culture. Such a thing exists nowhere else on the planet, but in Baalbek there is a 3700-year old Guru Pooja stone. So obviously, there was a very active commercial and spiritual connection between these two lands.”
